In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsjournals.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1164\/rccm.v203retraction1\">the retraction<\/a>, the authors said the study \u201cdid not conform to the stated experimental protocol\u201d but that they believed \u201cthe conclusions of the article may be correct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaushal also fabricated information in two grant applications submitted to the\u00a0National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, according to federal officials. One of the applications was lodged in 2019; the other was submitted in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He was identified in the paper as being affiliated with the Texas primate research center and the\u00a0Tulane National Primate Research Center in Louisiana. His biographies are still listed on websites for both institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Larry Schlesinger, president of the Texas center, said Kaushal was disciplined with \u201cthe minimum consequences,\u201d describing what happened as \u201ca first-time incident, and to our knowledge, the only time this has happened in Dr. Kaushal\u2019s lab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Kaushal has received internal consequences, including significant oversight of his lab. Texas Biomed is confident that this will not happen again and that Dr. Kaushal can continue to lead the Southwest National Primate Research Center capably and with integrity,\u201d Schlesinger said.<\/p>\n<p>The fabricated research happened before Kaushal\u2019s time with\u00a0Texas Biomed, and a review of all studies carried out at the institution found them to be accurate, according to Schlesinger.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Biomed was one of the institutions that tested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-pfizer\">Pfizer<\/a>\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine in primates in 2020. A paper on the work, which concluded that the vaccine protected macaques against the virus that causes COVID-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03275-y\">was published by Nature in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Tulane center said Kaushal conducted the research in question before he departed the institution but submitted the manuscript after his departure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter its publication, an anonymous complaint regarding possible research misconduct was received by Tulane. Tulane cooperated with Dr. Kaushal\u2019s current institution in their inquiry into this matter, in adherence with standards that have been established to ensure the integrity of scientific findings and the public\u2019s trust in those findings,\u201d the spokesperson told The Epoch Times via email.<\/p>\n<p>Kaushal, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the National Institutes of Health didn\u2019t respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Some outside researchers criticized Kaushal\u2019s employer for retaining him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny scientist who knowingly and intentionally falsifies data for the purpose of scientific publication and\/or receipt of government funding should not be allowed to lead a research institution,\u201d Ronald Desrosiers, who directed the\u00a0New England Primate Research Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/primate-research-center-head-will-keep-job-despite-misconduct-provoking-shock-and\">told Science magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Office of Research Integrity stated that Kaushal entered into a settlement agreement to have his research supervised for one year beginning on July 22. As part of the agreement, a committee of senior faculty members at Texas Biomed will provide oversight and guidance of Kaushal\u2019s work.
