Opposition senators and technology companies have taken Schumer\u2019s unwillingness as a sign that he lacks the votes necessary to pass the bill, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/antitrust-bill-targeting-big-tech-in-limbo-as-congress-prepares-to-recess-11659951180?mod=tech_lead_pos3\">WSJ<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/08\/google-offers-to-break-up-to-prevent-antitrust-lawsuit\/\">(RELATED: Google Offers To Break Up To Prevent Antitrust Lawsuit)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis would be the most dramatic change to antitrust rules in more than 50 years and would steer antitrust regulation to be more political \u2013 promoting favored firms rather than promoting competition,\u201d said Matt Schruers, president of the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA), a lobbying organization that represents Amazon, Google parent Alphabet, Apple and Facebook parent Meta, in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation. \u201cThis bill has never been ready for prime time, so it makes sense that Congress is prioritizing its problems voters care about like inflation, US competitiveness and economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the bill had the support its supporters contended, it wouldn\u2019t be a bill, it would be a law,\u201d said Schruers told the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>Advocates disagree, with the co-sponsor of the bill, Democratic Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island telling Time \u201cI think it\u2019s very clear that we have the votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s past time that the majority leader brings up our bipartisan antitrust bill cracking down on Big Tech\u2019s anticompetitive behavior,\u201d said co-sponsor Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley in a statement to Time.<\/p>\n<p>AICO would prevent tech companies from allowing their search engines to give their products advantages, such as preventing them from seeing competing products, or making it difficult for competitors on their platforms to reach consumers, according to the WSJ.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Instead asking big government to breakup big tech, conservatives and libertarians should support competitors like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rumblevideo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@rumblevideo<\/a>! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/enMuy6j932\">https:\/\/t.co\/enMuy6j932<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rand Paul (@RandPaul) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RandPaul\/status\/1468258986159968262?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 7, 2021<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI may be angry with YouTube for its policies that silence debate, but I would not allow my anger to support the use of antitrust to destroy the system that made YouTube possible,\u201d said Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paul.senate.gov\/fox-news-op-ed-dr-rand-paul-anger-big-tech-no-excuse-abandon-free-market\">op-ed<\/a> opposing the bill. \u201cDoing so now would only freeze YouTube\u2019s dominant position by preventing competitors from emerging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill, while widely endorsed by non-California Democrats, has less universal Republican support, and proponents and opponents alike believe that if Republicans gain control of either house of Congress in November, the bill\u2019s chances of becoming law will be significantly reduced, the WSJ reported. California Democrats, who represent the places where the tech companies call home, have raised concerns about the targeted nature of the bill, according to the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer initially promised to vote on the legislation over the summer, if there were sufficient votes, but at least a dozen critical votes were still not guaranteed by August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/8\/5\/23293678\/american-innovation-amazon-apple-google-facebook-antitrust-schumer-senate-vote\">according<\/a> to The Verge.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer, Grassley, Cicciline and Paul did not immediately respond to the DCNF.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
