BBC News did not create the graphic, according to a spokesperson for the outlet.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Monkeypox has spread across the world, with over 7,500 confirmed cases in the U.S., according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/response\/2022\/us-map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC). An image shared on Facebook claims to show a BBC News graphic with information about the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you need to know about monkeypox,\u201d reads the image\u2019s topline. It goes on to claim that the CDC stated the virus is airborne, that it is now classified as a type of herpes, can last two to four months and can lead to paralysis.<\/p>\n<p>The graphic is fabricated. Check Your Fact searched the BBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/search?q=monkeypox&#038;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> as well as its verified <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCWorld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter account<\/a> but found no record of it. A BBC News spokesperson confirmed in an email to Check Your Fact that the graphic was not real and urged people\u00a0to check the veracity of stories on the\u00a0<span class=\"il\">BBC<\/span>\u00a0News website.<\/p>\n<p>The claims made in the post are likewise false. There is no evidence to suggest the CDC stated the virus is airborne. Rather, the center states on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/faq.html#Spread\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> that the disease is spread \u201cthrough direct contact with the infectious rash, scabs, or body fluids\u201d and by \u201crespiratory secretions during prolonged, face-to-face contact, or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling, or sex.\u201d It likewise states that the illness lasts two to three weeks, not two to four months. Check Your Fact found no evidence to suggest the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/monkeypox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO) classifies the virus as herpes or stated it could cause paralysis.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Fowlie, a CDC spokesperson, confirmed to Check Your Fact in an email statement that the information in the graphic \u201cisn\u2019t correct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonkeypox virus is a completely different virus than those that cause COVID-19 or measles,\u201d added Fowlie. \u201cIt is not known to linger in the air and is not transmitted during short periods of shared airspace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A WHO spokesperson likewise confirmed in an email to Check Your Fact that the information in the graphic is false.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/05\/30\/fact-check-fda-prifzer-monkeypox-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: FACT CHECK: Did The FDA Approve A Pfizer Monkeypox Vaccine?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is some evidence to suggest that monkeypox can be airborne, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/07\/health\/monkeypox-masks-cdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a>.
