Turban, a trans activist and psychiatry fellow at UCSF, has a history of designing poor experiments and using bad methodology to draw erroneous conclusions from data.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Examples of his work\u2019s many red flags have been well-documented by various publications such as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/spectatorworld.com\/topic\/media-wrong-gender-reassignment-transgender\/\">Spectator World<\/a><\/em>, Jesse Singal\u2019s S<a href=\"https:\/\/jessesingal.substack.com\/p\/science-vs-cited-seven-studies-to\">ubstack<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@JLCederblom\/the-lukewarm-perjury-of-jack-turban-a85903109051\">Medium<\/a><\/em>, and even high-ranking <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10508-020-01844-2\">academic journals.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Leor Sapir, a Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and researcher with a PhD in Political Science, calls the study &#8220;a new low&#8221; in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/major-flaws-in-new-study-on-pediatric-gender-transition\">breakdown<\/a> that identifies &#8220;major flaws&#8221; in Turban\u2019s study.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Journalist Jesse Singal also published a <a href=\"https:\/\/jessesingal.substack.com\/p\/the-new-study-on-rapid-onset-gender\">review of the study<\/a> on his Substack, where he called the study &#8220;genuinely worthless&#8221; and cited experts in the field of gender medicine critiquing the study\u2019s many flaws. Singal tweeted about the study, &#8220;You guys know I am The Nuance Guy and try to avoid overheated language, but &#8216;worthless&#8217; is apt here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Several twitter threads from scientists have also emerged breaking down the study\u2019s numerous flaws.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Sapir points out that <em>Pediatrics<\/em> is the same journal that published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/0092623X.2019.1698481\">thoroughly debunked<\/a> 2018 article by Jason Rafferty that claimed to find conclusive evidence that alternatives to gender-affirming care are &#8220;futile and harmful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Turban\u2019s study relies on a supplemental questionnaire given to students in 16 states. Turban\u2019s study concluded that more boys than girls identified as trans in 2017 (1.5 boys for every girl) and 2019 (1.2 boys for every girl), but ignores the large trend over the last decade. Based on his biased sample, the paper concludes the contagion hypothesis to be unsupported.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>But looking into the methodologies Turban deployed, Sapir and Singal found glaring red flags. The questionnaire asked students whether they self-identify as <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/detransitioners-slam-trans-and-mental-health-industry-for-urging-them-into-transition\">transgender<\/a>, with a choice of four answers: yes, no, I don\u2019t know, and I don\u2019t understand the question. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Turban includes only those who said yes (2.4 percent in 2017, 1.6 percent in 2019), but leaves out those who answered, &#8220;I don\u2019t know,&#8221; (4 percent). Sapir points out that students who identify as &#8220;non-binary&#8221; are more likely to choose &#8220;I don\u2019t know.&#8221; Sapir notes that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/15532739.2017.1394954?journalCode=wijt20\">conceivable<\/a> that members of this group are more likely to be female, and more likely to be affected by social contagion than those with ongoing gender dysphoria.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Another huge red flag in the questionnaire asks respondents what their &#8220;sex&#8221; is, which Turban assumes to mean &#8220;sex assigned at birth&#8221; rather than &#8220;gender identity,&#8221; but it is unclear how students understood the question. Sapir mentions that the researcher who developed the questionnaire for the CDC has herself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/68\/wr\/mm6803a3.htm\">admitted<\/a> the &#8220;uncertainty as to whether transgender students responded to the sex question with their sex or gender identity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;We simply cannot know how many of the respondents who ticked &#8216;male&#8217; as their &#8216;sex&#8217; are (biological) boys who identify as girls and vice versa,&#8221; said Sapir.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Data supporting a strong predominance of <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/new-documentary-features-the-stories-of-3-detransitioners\">girls identifying as transgender<\/a> over boys has been well documented in internationally observed, peer-reviewed research that has remained steady over the past decade. Sapir found that Turban\u2019s data was collected solely from the US, from less than one-third of states, and only focused only on two specific years. &#8220;Even if Turban is right about the ratios, a decline of girls relative to boys at gender clinics would not refute social contagion,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;Turban and his colleagues made doubly broken claims about sex ratios among American trans youth,&#8221; said Singal. &#8220;I say &#8216;doubly broken&#8217; because there\u2019s an issue both with how the question was asked and with the fact that the data is about as unrepresentative as can be.
