The mysterious inventor of bitcoin is a renowned figure in the world of cryptocurrency but his true identity is unknown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">However, the British blogger Peter McCormack was certain about one thing: the answer isn\u2019t Craig Wright.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sign-in-gate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">For years Wright, an Australian computer scientist, has claimed that he is Satoshi, the pseudonymous author of the 2008 <a href=\"https:\/\/nakamotoinstitute.org\/bitcoin\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">white paper<\/a> behind bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Wright\u2019s assertion that he is the inventor of the digital asset \u2013 he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/may\/02\/bitcoin-craig-wright-satoshi-nakamoto-inventor-scepticism\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">first sought to prove that he is<\/a> Satoshi in 2016, months after his name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/12\/bitcoins-creator-satoshi-nakamoto-is-probably-this-unknown-australian-genius\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">first emerged<\/a> \u2013 has led to a series of legal tussles, some of which are continuing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">One of them came to a pyrrhic conclusion in London <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/aug\/01\/craig-wright-wins-only-nominal-damages-of-1-in-bitcoin-libel-case\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">this week<\/a>, when McCormack was found to have caused serious harm to Wright\u2019s reputation by repeatedly claiming that he is a fraud and is not Satoshi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">But Wright, 52, won nominal damages of \u00a31 after a high court judge ruled that he had given \u201cdeliberately false evidence\u201d to support his libel claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">For cost reasons, McCormack did not offer a defence of truth \u2013 where the defendant in the case attempts to show that the allegations are substantially true \u2013 as Mr Justice Chamberlain ruled that one claim made in a video discussion on YouTube was defamatory, while a series of tweets repeating the fraud claims were ruled to have caused serious harm to Wright\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cBecause he [Wright] advanced a deliberately false case and put forward deliberately false evidence until days before trial, he will recover only nominal damages,\u201d wrote the judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">McCormack\u2019s defence, shifted to a much narrower footing, was that the video and the tweets did not cause serious harm to Wright\u2019s reputation. Wright claimed that his reputation had been seriously harmed by the tweets because he had been disinvited from 10 conferences, which meant that academic papers due to be presented at those events had not been published.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">McCormack submitted evidence from conference organisers who challenged Wright\u2019s claims. Those claims were then dropped from Wright\u2019s case at the trial in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The judge was scathing. He said: \u201cDr Wright\u2019s original case on serious harm, and the evidence supporting it, both of which were maintained until days before trial, were deliberately false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Wright, who lives in Surrey and is the chief scientist at the blockchain technology firm nChain, said he had brought the case \u201cnot for financial reward, but for the principle and to get others to think twice before seeking to impugn my reputation\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">And the legal cases continue to pile up. Wright has other high court cases pending. He has brought a libel case against a Norwegian Twitter user, Marcus Granath, who has also accused the Australian of being a fraud. Granath recently failed in an attempt to have the case thrown out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Wright is also suing two cryptocurrency exchanges in a case that argues that a digital asset called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/bitcoin\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Bitcoin<\/a> Satoshi Vision (BSV), which he backs, is the true descendant of the white paper. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (Copa), a non-profit that supports cryptocurrencies, is seeking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bailii.org\/ew\/cases\/EWHC\/Ch\/2021\/3440.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">high court declaration<\/a> that Wright is not the author of the white paper. Its case claims that Wright forged evidence produced to support his assertion that he is Satoshi. Wright, who denies Copa\u2019s claims, failed in an attempt to have the case <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bailii.org\/ew\/cases\/EWHC\/Ch\/2021\/3440.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">struck out<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">There was more legal back and forth before that. In 2020, Wright lost an attempt to sue Roger Ver, an early bitcoin backer, for calling Wright a fraud on YouTube after a judge ruled that the appropriate jurisdiction for a lawsuit would be the US. One year later, Wright won a <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.org\/IL-2021-000008-Wright-v-Cobra.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">copyright infringement claim<\/a> against the anonymous operator and publisher of the bitcoin.org website for publishing the white paper. Wright won by default after bitcoin.org\u2019s publisher, who goes by the pseudonym of Cobra, declined to speak in their defence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">In the US, Wright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/dec\/07\/australian-man-craig-wright-wins-us-court-battle-for-bitcoin-fortune-worth-billions\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">won a case in December<\/a> that spared him having to pay out a multibillion-dollar sum in bitcoins to the family of David Kleiman, a former business partner. Kleiman\u2019s family had claimed that he was a co-creator of bitcoin along with Wright and they were therefore owed half of the 1.1m bitcoins \u201cmined\u201d by Satoshi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The case was closely watched in the expectation that if Wright lost he would have had to move those bitcoins \u2013 seen as the sword-in-the-stone test that would prove Satoshi\u2019s true identity. Those coins are now worth $25bn (\u00a321bn) at the current price of about $23,000 and sit on the bitcoin blockchain, a decentralised ledger that records all bitcoin transactions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Satoshi <a href=\"https:\/\/nakamotoinstitute.org\/bitcoin\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">published<\/a> the cryptocurrency\u2019s foundation text \u2013 Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System \u2013 on 31 October 2008 and communicated by email with the currency\u2019s first adherents before disappearing in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Carol Alexander, professor of finance at University of Sussex business school, says Wright could prove that he is Satoshi by using the so-called private keys \u2013 a secure code comprising a hexadecimal string of numbers and letters \u2013 that will unlock access to the bitcoins.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"5dca4854-bdbd-454f-9722-53514ef7bd21\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.EmbedBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-10khgmf\">&#8220;,&#8221;isTracking&#8221;:false,&#8221;isMainMedia&#8221;:false,&#8221;source&#8221;:&#8221;The Guardian&#8221;,&#8221;sourceDomain&#8221;:&#8221;theguardian.com&#8221;}&#8221;><\/p>\n<div data-cy=\"embed-block\" class=\"dcr-1eb3j3r\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cThe only way that Wright could prove he is SN would be to make a transaction with some of the original bitcoin,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Wright is adamant that he will not do this, <a href=\"https:\/\/craigwright.net\/blog\/law-regulation\/keys-identity\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">saying private keys<\/a> do not prove ownership or identity. There are few other Satoshi candidates. In 2014, a Japanese-American man, Dorian S Nakamoto, was named by Newsweek as the creator of bitcoin and promptly denied any link to the digital currency. More informed speculation has centred on Nick Szabo, an American computer scientist who designed BitGold, viewed as a conceptual precursor to bitcoin. But he too has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/17\/business\/decoding-the-enigma-of-satoshi-nakamoto-and-the-birth-of-bitcoin.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">denied claims that he might be Satoshi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">In the meantime, Mr Justice Chamberlain left open a question that remains unanswered. \u201cThe identity of Satoshi is not among the issues I
