Wade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Indiana Legislature took a devastating step as a result of the Supreme Court\u2019s extreme decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate women\u2019s constitutionally-protected right to abortion,\u201d White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/06\/statement-by-white-house-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-on-the-indiana-abortion-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd, it\u2019s another radical step by Republican legislators to take away women\u2019s reproductive rights and freedom, and put personal health care decisions in the hands of politicians rather than women and their doctors,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The statement challenged Congress to \u201cact immediately\u201d to restore the protections of <em>Roe.\u00a0<\/em>It also said President Joe Biden is \u201ccommitted to taking action\u201d regarding access to abortion care under federal law.<\/p>\n<p>The new Indiana law is set to take effect on September 15. The restrictions against abortion include exceptions for rape, incest, and protecting the life of the mother.<\/p>\n<p>Victims of rape or incest will not be required to sign an affidavit to verify claims of an attack, though the addition had been proposed in an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-health-indiana-indianapolis-legislature-3be0e2a10d9de57b16e2968c5473681a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier version<\/a> of the law.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Eric Holcomb (R-IN) released a <a href=\"https:\/\/events.in.gov\/event\/gov_holcomb_statement_following_conclusion_of_special_session?utm_campaign=widget&#038;utm_medium=widget&#038;utm_source=State+of+Indiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> to mark his signing of the bill into law on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the overturning of Roe, I stated clearly that I would be willing to support legislation that made progress in protecting life. Ultimately, those voices shaped and informed the final contents of the legislation and its carefully negotiated exceptions to address some of the unthinkable circumstances a woman or unborn child might face,\u201d the governor added.<\/p>\n<p>Though pro-life advocates celebrated the law\u2019s signing, not everyone was pleased with the outcome. Eli Lilly and Co., one of the state\u2019s largest employers, released a statement opposing the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we have expanded our employee health plan coverage to include travel for reproductive services unavailable locally, that may not be enough for some current and potential employees,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adamwren\/status\/1555894094244741120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven this new law, we will be forced to plan for more employment growth outside our home state,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has also continued to oppose new state laws enacting limitations on abortion.
