One of the rules in the Patriots organization has been to never be late for a meeting or practice. One morning during his rookie year, the right guard found himself in a precarious situation with his back against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Ohrnberger, co-host of the \u201cThe Hartman and Rich O Show\u201d in San Diego, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/2022\/08\/05\/patriots-rich-ohrnberger-bill-belichick-wrecked-car\/10246737002\/\">recalled<\/a> on Thursday, \u201cYou don\u2019t want to be the guy wandering into a squad team meeting with Bill Belichick and the rest of the squad team looking at you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wake up, my phone died overnight, and I realize I wake up to the sound of chirping birds and not my alarm going off, and I am frantic,\u201d he explained. \u201cI don\u2019t even bother looking at the clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had this sinking feeling in my stomach,\u201d Ohrnberger said. \u201cLike \u2018I\u2019m gonna get cut. Like, he\u2019s not going to have me on this football team come tomorrow. What do I do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when he decided to make a last-ditch effort to conjure up an excuse that might not get him fired. He said he rammed his vehicle into a van.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see a church van in front of me that\u2019s all dinged up. It\u2019s got the black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. I\u2019m like, \u2018I\u2019m gonna hit this car.\u2019 I\u2019m gonna rear end this car. I\u2019m gonna hit this car because it\u2019s better to pay the insurance or peel off this guy a couple hundred bucks than embarrass myself for being late to this Patriots team meeting,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the NFL rookie realized that he had hit an elderly man, which he felt awful about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI rear end this poor old man, who by the way, was like minutes from being 100 years old,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Once Orhnberger arrived at the Patriots facility, he spoke with Belichick\u2019s assistant before seeing his offensive line coach, Dante Scarnecchia. His boss wasn\u2019t buying his story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst one in there was Dante Scarnecchia, my offensive line coach,\u201d Ohrnberger continued. \u201cHe goes, \u2018How\u2019s it going, speed racer?\u2019 I was like, \u2018What\u2019s that?\u2019 He says, \u2018Running a little late this morning?\u2019 I was like, \u2018Dante, I got into an accident.\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u2018Yeah, yeah, yeah. That stuff may fly at IBM if you\u2019re one of those geeks working on the computers and stuff. That stuff doesn\u2019t work here. You be on time from now on.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t get fired.
