Ukraine claims to have destroyed fewer than 2,000 Russian tanks.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine is now in its fifth month, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2022\/07\/24\/ukraine-russian-war-five-months\/10119434002\/?gnt-cfr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USA Today<\/a>. Ukrainians are counterattacking in Kherson while the Russians are staging localized offensives in the Donbas, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-august-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute for the Study of War<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A video shared on Facebook and viewed more than 12,000 times claims Ukraine has destroyed 5,000 Russian tanks. The video consists of a narrator reading an Aug. 1 article from Newsweek titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/russia-lost-5k-military-vehicles-ukraine-war-1729590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russia Has Lost 5,000 Military Vehicles in Ukraine War: Analysis<\/a>\u201d and a July 30 article titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/pentagon-himars-ukraine-f-16s-russia-war-air-force-1729362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russia Failing to Gain Air Superiority as U.S. HIMARS Hit SAMs: Pentagon<\/a>.\u201d The video itself features a compilation of clips showing tanks and explosions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHUGE DAMAGE! Ukrainian Destroyed 5,000 Russian Tanks,\u201d reads the post\u2019s caption and title. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/07\/27\/fact-check-ukraine-crimea-missile-strikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Ukraine Hit Crimea With HIMARs Missile Strikes?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook video\u2019s title and caption are incorrect. Oryx, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oryxspioenkop.com\/2022\/02\/attack-on-europe-documenting-equipment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> that tracks military losses in various conflicts, has verified over 5,000 Russian military vehicles as being destroyed, damaged, captured or abandoned throughout the course of the war. Out of the 5,000 vehicles destroyed, damaged, captured or abandoned, the organization lists 926 Russian tanks, with 562 categorized as \u201cdestroyed\u201d and 280 as \u201ccaptured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine itself has not claimed to have destroyed over 5,000 tanks.
