Gavin Newsom (D) demanded Wednesday that Hollywood studios boycott states that pass pro-life laws and restrictions on abortion, as he backed a five-year extension of a $1.65 billion state tax credit to the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2022\/08\/03\/governor-newsom-supports-1-65-billion-film-tv-tax-credit-extension-calls-on-the-industry-to-stand-up-for-employees\/\">announced<\/a> his support for the tax credit, and in an accompanying public advertisement titled \u201cHollywood: Your Values, Your Choice,\u201d Newsom said that it was \u201ctime to choose\u201d between California\u2019s liberal values, and those of conservative states (original emphasis):<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Over the past\u00a0several years, the legislatures of states like Georgia and Oklahoma have waged a cruel assault on essential rights.\u00a0<\/strong>Now, in the wake of the Supreme Court\u2019s abhorrent decision overturning Roe v. Wade, those same states are moving quickly to strip reproductive freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today more than ever, you have a responsibility to take stock of your values \u2014 and those of your employees \u2014 when doing business in those states.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>California is a freedom state:\u00a0<\/strong>Freedom to tell your stories. Freedom to access the health services you need, including abortion care.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So to those in power to make decisions about where to film, where to hire, where to open new offices, we in California say:\u00a0<strong>Walk the walk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Choose freedom. Choose creativity. We\u2019re extending tax credits for those that come home to the Golden State.<\/p>\n<p>Choose freedom.<br \/>Choose CA. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9Bcmc6zpdu\">pic.twitter.com\/9Bcmc6zpdu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1554845431649079297?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s message suggests that the state is willing to impose its own ideological views on the entertainment industry \u2014 and that the \u201cfreedom\u201d the industry enjoys in the state, including its access to tax credits, depends on conformity to the state view.<\/p>\n<p>Without any sense of irony, Newsom suggested that conforming to the government\u2019s own view meant choosing \u201ccreativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>California is in the habit of boycotting conservative states, so much so that the state bans official travel to 22 states, nearly half the country. (That did not stop Newsom from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/07\/06\/gavin-newsom-vacations-in-montana-despite-californias-travel-ban\/\">vacationing<\/a> in Idaho in violation of the ban, taking a state security detail.)<\/p>\n<p>However, despite boycotts and threats, states like Georgia are seeing record spending in film and television production, as Breitbart News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2022\/08\/03\/georgia-sees-record-high-film-and-tv-production-spending-despite-celebrity-boycott-threats-over-abortion\/\">reported<\/a> on Wednesday. One reason for Newsom\u2019s heavy-handed message is that California is facing steep competition from states and countries that offer the industry lower production costs, fewer regulations, and more tax credits.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
