The law <a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Laws\/SessionLaws\/Acts\/2022\/Chapter127\">requires<\/a> that all publicly-funded places of higher education submit a detailed \u201cmedication abortion readiness plan\u201d to the department of public health annually beginning November 30, 2023. The plan should explain how the school will provide medication abortion access or arrange for off-campus medication abortions for its students. Massachusetts\u2019 public health department will then \u201cprovide a grant to each health center to pay for the cost of direct and indirect medication abortion readiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat this legislation was intended to do was to normalize medication abortion as a part of health care and put it where students already are, which is on their campuses and in campus health centers,\u201d Taylor St. Germain, communications director for Reproductive Equity Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/local-news\/2022\/08\/01\/new-law-ensures-medication-abortion-access-for-public-university-students-in-mass\">told<\/a> WGBH. \u201cStudents are already receiving a large chunk of their health care from these campus health centers a lot of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The law also codifies abortion \u2014 as well radical gender theory surgeries and other procedures \u2014 as a right recognized in the commonwealth\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess to reproductive health care services and gender-affirming health care services is a right secured by the constitution and laws of the commonwealth,\u201d the law reads. \u201cInterference with this right, whether or not under the color of law, is against the public policy of the commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State Senator Lindsay Sabadosa helped craft the legislation and said she copied the idea from California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was previously introduced and passed in the state of California,\u201d Sabadosa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2022\/08\/04\/public-colleges-in-mass-are-now-required-by-law-to-provide-medication-abortion-access\/\">told<\/a> Boston.com. \u201cThe idea came because I was at a meeting with UMass Amherst students discussing health care and ways that we can expand access and one of the students said, \u2018Hey, I\u2019ve been following this thing that\u2019s been going on in California and I think we should do it here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabadosa also explained that \u2014 in her view \u2014 students might end up at crisis pregnancy centers without the law. The state senator explained that without access to these kinds of abortion services on campus, students might have to Google something and wind up being helped by pro-life activists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf students are getting online and searching for services, sometimes you end up at the right spot and sometimes you end up at a crisis pregnancy center,\u201d Sabadosa explained. \u201cCPCs tend to pop up around college campuses specifically, so avoiding those is a great byproduct of the legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason Lewis, a state senator who also supported the law, told the media that college students in particular need to be able to conveniently abort their baby, should they desire to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a population where access to abortion care is particularly important,\u201d Lewis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2022\/08\/04\/public-colleges-in-mass-are-now-required-by-law-to-provide-medication-abortion-access\/\">told<\/a> the press. \u201cThis can be a major crisis for them and that just should not be the case here in Massachusetts.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Charlie Baker (R-MA) recently signed legislation into law that requires all Bay State public universities and colleges to provide access to medication abortion, either through their school\u2019s health services or local resources.
