Vance, Mehmet Oz, Ted Budd. You have Trump-loyal Republicans like Eric Schmitt, who just won in Missouri, Blake Masters in Arizona, and some of those candidates have refused to say on the trail that they back you as leader,\u201d Baier said, referring to several Senate candidates backed by Trump. \u201cIs that the new face of a \u2018Trumpified\u2019 Republican Party? And are you the guy to lead that in the Senate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McConnell said he\u2019s still very confident in being reelected GOP leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, look at it this way: I have been elected eight times without opposition. If I have an opponent\u2014I don\u2019t own this job, and there\u2019s always an election every two years for leader\u2014if anybody wants to challenge me, have at it,\u201d the Kentucky Republican said.<\/p>\n<p>Baier followed up by asking:\u00a0\u201cIf you don\u2019t win the majority, are you still going to be leader?\u201d to which McConnell replied, \u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Trump Versus McConnell <\/p>\n<p>While Trump and McConnell rarely butted heads while the former president was in office, he\u2019s frequently targeted the longtime Senate leader since the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. At one point, Trump suggested McConnell be ousted from his leadership position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political \u2018leaders\u2019 like Sen.
