It\u2019s just on automatic pilot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Social Security benefits are available upon retirement in the United States to citizens age 65 or older or those who are disabled, while Medicare health insurance is available to\u00a0people 65 or older, or to some younger people with disabilities. The programs are funded by payroll taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said the two programs should have their budgets\u00a0appropriated by Congress each year so that everything can be evaluated.<\/p>\n<p> \u2018Massive Debt Burden\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we ought to be doing is we ought to turn everything into discretionary spending so it\u2019s all evaluated so that we can fix problems or fix programs that are broken, that are going to be going bankrupt,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cAs long as things are on automatic pilot, we just continue to pile up debt. \u2026 It\u2019s this massive debt burden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medicare currently covers almost <a href=\"https:\/\/banks.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/fy23_budget_final_copy.pdf\">64 million<\/a> Americans and is projected to cost $1.02 trillion in 2023, according to the\u00a0Republican Study Committee, while over\u00a055 million retirees, survivors, and their families collect benefits from the Social Security<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.\u00a0Ron Johnson\u00a0(R-Wis.) on\u00a0Wednesday suggested that\u00a0Social Security and Medicare should no longer be classified as federal entitlement programs and instead the funds should be approved by Congress on a yearly basis in an effort to curb debt.
