When I got the rejection email from the city and it said \u2018separation of church and state,\u2019 I knew we had a case,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Shurtleff and other supporters celebrated the moment, but the city of Boston is working on a new policy that could soon give the local government more power in deciding which flags are approved at City Hall.\u00a0The Boston Herald\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2022\/08\/02\/camp-constitution-christian-flag-to-fly-over-boston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Tuesday that the city expects to propose a change to its flag policies following the Supreme Court case.<\/p>\n<p>CBS News Boston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/boston-city-hall-flag-christian-us-supreme-court-camp-constitution-harold-shurtleff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that the proposal would push for any group that wants to fly a flag on City Hall Plaza will \u201cnow need either a proclamation from the mayor or a resolution from the council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The developments continue despite the Supreme Court\u2019s 9-0 decision in May that ruled in favor of the Christian flag flying over Boston\u2019s City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe conclude that, on balance, Boston did not make the raising and flying of private groups\u2019 flags a form of government speech. That means, in turn, that Boston\u2019s refusal to let Shurtleff and Camp Constitution raise their flag based on its religious viewpoint \u2018abridg[ed]\u2019 their \u2018freedom of speech,\u2019\u201d Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer wrote in the court\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/20-1800.pdf\">opinion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/boston-illegally-rejected-request-to-fly-christian-flag-supreme-court-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, the case emerged from a 2017 incident when the city denied the Camp Constitution\u2019s request to raise the Christian flag outside Boston City Hall. The application followed the city\u2019s custom of allowing groups to use one of the city\u2019s three flag poles to fly an event, organization, or movement-specific flag for special occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2005 to 2017, the city flew about 50 different flags for nearly 300 activities and celebrations. Previously approved flags included those from communist governments such as China and Cuba and an LGBT-related pride flag.<\/p>\n<p>After the court\u2019s ruling, the Satanic Temple also made public its\u00a0official request in a post on Twitter as part of \u201cSatanic Appreciation Week\u201d in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReligious Liberty is a bedrock principle in a democracy, and Religious Liberty is dependent upon government viewpoint neutrality,\u201d Lucien Greaves, co-founder of The Satanic Temple, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/boston\/2022\/05\/satanic-temple-requests-flag-raising-at-boston-city-hall-after-supreme-court-rules-city-violated-free-speech-rights-in-refusing-to-fly-christian-flag.html\">statement<\/a> in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen public officials are allowed to preference certain religious viewpoints over others, we do not have Religious Liberty, we have theocracy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Christian flag flew above Boston\u2019s City Hall briefly on Wednesday, with supporters joining in celebration and songs of praise.
