The Ukrainian official said that Washington did not provide specific information that helped Ukraine identify targets, but suggested that America\u2019s supply of weapons to Ukraine came with some caveats.\n<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defense issued a statement in response to the interview, claiming that it \u201cundeniably proves\u201d that Washington is \u201cdirectly involved in the conflict in Ukraine.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the Biden administration that is directly responsible for all Kyiv-approved rocket attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure in populated areas of Donbas and other regions, which have resulted in mass deaths of civilians,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/8\/2\/russia-accuses-us-of-direct-role-in-war-in-ukraine\">the statement reads.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Neither the Pentagon nor the White House immediately responded to the accusations \u2013 but the consequences of comments like could be highly consequential.\n<\/p>\n<p>Is it just the latest indication that Putin wants to declare war against the United States?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inching Ever Closer to War<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>In April, Russia\u2019s Foreign Ministry declared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/08\/putin-is-really-angry-nato-now-has-f-22-raptors-headed-near-ukraine\/\">NATO<\/a> and U.S. arms convoys in Ukraine \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/russia\/553811-nato-weapons-legitimate-targets\/\">legitimate targets<\/a>\u201d for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/08\/zaporizhzhia-power-plant-held-as-nuclear-hostage\/\">Russian military<\/a>, expressing anger over the continued supply of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/07\/what-happens-if-ukraine-runs-out-of-himars-rockets\/\">weapons<\/a> and ammunition to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Sergei Koshelev, a Russian Foreign Ministry official, said that Moscow was entitled to consider the arms convoys legitimate targets, raising questions about whether the Kremlin would go as far as striking those convoys before they entered Ukrainian territory. Had the Kremlin made that decision, it would have effectively been a declaration of war against NATO and likely the beginning of World War Three.\n<\/p>\n<p>Russia did not, however, strike NATO convoys on NATO soil. Instead, several depots filled with NATO weapons and ammunition have been struck on Ukrainian soil in recent months, taking out tanks, rocket launchers, and missiles. In June, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/russia-says-it-destroyed-depot-with-western-weapons-in-ukraine\/article65520329.ece\">Russia announced<\/a> that a depot containing Western weapons was destroyed in the Ternopil region.\n<\/p>\n<p>In May, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the West of waging a \u201ctotal war\u201d against Russia, ramping up rhetoric and inching closer to declaring America\u2019s support of Ukraine and the ongoing supply of weapons as acts of war.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many Western countries, everyday Russophobia has become of an unprecedented nature, and, to our great regret, is encouraged by government circles in a number of countries,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/west-has-declared-total-war-on-russia-lavrov-01653645907\">Lavrov said<\/a> at the time.\n<\/p>\n<p>The implications of declaring war against the United States are so severe, however, that it\u2019s no wonder Russia has only paid lip service to the idea so far. As the Kremlin continues to suffer catastrophic losses on the battlefield courtest of U.S.-supplied HIMARS rocket systems, however, the idea that Putin could retaliate becomes less and less far-fetched.\n<\/p>\n<p>On July 30, a special train of over 40 cars filled with Russian troops, ammunition, and military equipment was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-ato\/3540882-russias-special-train-of-over-40-cars-destroyed-with-himars-in-kherson-region.html\">destroyed by Western-supplied HIMARS.<\/a> The long-range rocket systems also allowed the Ukrainian military to destroy a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/world\/russia-at-war\/us-rocket-system-helps-ukraine-destroy-key-supply-bridge\/\">key supply bridge<\/a> in the occupied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/08\/will-putin-win-or-lose-in-ukraine-let-the-battle-for-kherson-begin\/\">Kherson region<\/a>, putting Ukraine one step closer to its goal of recapturing the region by September.\n<\/p>\n<p>If Russia fails to keep up its momentum in the Donbas, and if U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/07\/himars-really-a-game-changer-in-ukraine-or-just-hype\/\">weapons<\/a> are what prevents a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/08\/ukraines-guerrilla-war-against-russia-is-making-putin-pay-a-high-price\/\">Russian victory<\/a>, there\u2019s no telling what Putin could do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/do-russian-lawmakers-want-world-war-iii-with-nato\/\">next<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p><em>Jack Buckby is a British author, counter-extremism researcher, and journalist based in New York.
