Whistleblower accounts made public in recent weeks suggest the allegations have weight.<\/p>\n<p>Wray took over as head of the FBI in August 2017 after the firing of former Director James Comey, whose legacy was marred by the FBI\u2019s handling of investigations of both of the major candidates in the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>As FBI head, Wray <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/press-releases\/fbi-director-christopher-wray-response-to-inspector-general-report\">said<\/a> institutional reform is a priority. The FBI is dedicated to cleaning out internal bad actors and erecting safeguards to prevent a repeat of the failings of 2016, he told the inspector general of the Department of Justice (DOJ). Accounts from whistleblowers and others suggest Wray has fallen short on his pledge to protect the FBI\u2019s credibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Covering for Hunter Biden<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Chuck Grassley (R-IA) sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/grassley_to_justice_deptfbipoliticalbiasfollowup.pdf\">letter<\/a> to Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland last month detailing whistleblower allegations that the FBI wrongly, and duplicitously, classified potentially damning information about Hunter Biden, the president\u2019s son, as disinformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe information provided to my office involves concerns about the FBI\u2019s receipt and use of derogatory information relating to Hunter Biden, and the FBI\u2019s false portrayal of acquired evidence as disinformation. The volume and consistency of these allegations substantiate their credibility and necessitate this letter,\u201d Grassley wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Whistleblowers told Grassley that the FBI obtained information in 2020 \u2014 just months before the November election \u2014 suggesting the younger Biden may have committed financial fraud and other crimes. In August 2020, FBI Supervisory Intelligence Analyst Brian Auten falsely assessed the information on Biden as fake.<\/p>\n<p>Before reviewing the Biden information, Auten seemingly went under official review for his role in the botched 2016 Crossfire Hurricane investigation. Auten \u201cfailed to advise\u201d others at the FBI of inconsistencies and false information in the notorious Steele Dossier, according to an inspector general report of Crossfire Hurricane failings. Wray told the DOJ inspector general that the bureau would \u201creview the performance and conduct\u201d of all agents who played a role in the failings identified in the inspector general\u2019s report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFBI Headquarters\u201d used Auten\u2019s report to \u201cimproperly discredit negative Hunter Biden information as disinformation and caused investigative activity to cease,\u201d Grassley wrote. \u201c[T]he allegations provided to my office appear to indicate that there was a scheme in place among certain FBI officials to undermine derogatory information connected to Hunter Biden by falsely suggesting it was disinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020, months after Auten\u2019s audit and one month after the election, Hunter Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/hunter-biden-says-tax-affairs-under-federal-investigation\">revealed<\/a> that his \u201ctax affairs\u201d are under investigation by the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Playing up right-wing extremism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In April, a West Michigan jury acquitted two men and hung on charges against two others that federal prosecutors alleged to have conspired to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The jury\u2019s decision was a harsh rebuke of a seven-month long FBI investigation that defendants claimed was riddled with misconduct and amounted to entrapment.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents arrested the defendants and two others in October 2020, a month before the presidential election. The FBI claimed to have busted a group of armed conspirators that had been plotting for months to kidnap and potentially assassinate the governor of Michigan. The FBI had hundreds of hours of recordings and footage of secret meetings, militia training sessions, and even recon trips to Whitmer\u2019s cottage in northern Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>The bust was hailed as \u201cone of the most important domestic terrorism prosecutions in a generation,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/kenbensinger\/fbi-michigan-kidnap-whitmer\">BuzzFeed<\/a>. The federal government\u2019s case began to unravel, however, after it barred three of the FBI agents who worked on the case from testifying at trial over allegations of misconduct and criminal activity. An FBI confidential human source was barred from trial after the government accused him of being a \u201cdouble agent\u201d for the alleged conspirators.<\/p>\n<p>The four defendants \u2014 two others charged pleaded guilty \u2014 said that FBI agents and sources pushed the alleged conspirators to greater lengths, led key aspects of the alleged conspiracy, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fbi-worked-to-keep-alleged-conspiracist-in-violent-group-headed-for-split\">kept<\/a> the group of defendants together when the inner circle was on the verge of rupturing. As the trial concluded in April 2022, not a single defendant who contested the charges was convicted.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the bust, the alleged conspiracy was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/08\/us\/verdict-whitmer-kidnapping-case.html\">used<\/a> to stoke fears of a right-wing domestic extremism that wanted to use violence to spark a civil war.
