Variety\u2019s chief television critic Caroline Framke noted this format of squeezing their stories \u201ctogether doesn\u2019t just make for confusing television, but does them all a disservice in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Critics on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/tv\/the_first_lady\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> gave show a score of 41%, with several accusing the series of failing to have \u201ccompelling narratives\u201d for the leads. One critic for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2022\/04\/the-first-lady-tv-show-review\/629670\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>, Shirly Li, wrote that \u201cThe First Lady is a barely thematically connected and carelessly staged summary of three fascinating figures. All of them deserved better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2022\/05\/09\/the-first-lady-is-a-bad-wig-costume-drama\">New Yorker<\/a>\u00a0wrote that, \u201cThe Showtime miniseries, starring Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Gillian Anderson, manages to make life as a White House wife seem both cosmic and forgettable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Audiences appeared to struggle with the story-telling structure, too, but more so with the way Obama was portrayed, giving the series a 58%.<\/p>\n<p>Several wrote about how upsetting they found Obama\u2019s character.\u00a0\u201cReally upset with Michelle Obama character played by Viola Davis I\u2019ve never seen Michelle look so strange with the awful eyebrows and wiggly mounts?\u201d one person wrote.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Viola Davis on playing Michelle Obama in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TheFirstLady?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TheFirstLady<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of fear that I messed up my portrayal. I just hope that it lands with her.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wVaZJx7lQL\">pic.twitter.com\/wVaZJx7lQL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FilmUpdates\/status\/1515836817303502850?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another wrote that they had a problem with the \u201cswitching back and forth\u201d in the timeline and wrote that \u201cI would have preferred watching more of a single timeline. In fact, 3 separate series, starting with Eleanor, then Betty, and lastly Michelle would have been better. Viola Davis always pursing her lips was extremely distracting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really enjoy this series,\u201d a third shared. \u201cMy favorites are Gillian Anderson and Michelle Pfeiffer\u2019s portrayals.
