The U.S. has considered sanctioning Kabaeva since at least April, but U.S. officials <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/25\/putins-secret-girlfriend-spared-us-sanctions\/\">had, until now, felt <\/a>that going after her would be \u201cdeemed so personal a blow to Mr. Putin that it could further escalate tensions between Russia and the U.S,\u201d the WSJ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-withholds-sanctions-on-a-very-close-putin-associate-his-alleged-girlfriend-11650816894?mod=article_inline\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">Kabaeva is believed to be Putin\u2019s mistress and the mother to at least three of his children, the WSJ added. She is also a former Russian Vogue cover model and Olympic champion gymnast incriminated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/12\/05\/russia-banned-from-2018-winter-olympics\/\">Russian doping scandal,<\/a> and is also suspected of helping hide Putin\u2019s personal wealth overseas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-sanctions-woman-it-calls-vladimir-putins-girlfriend-11659489645?mod=politics_lead_pos12\">according to<\/a> a separate WSJ article.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">The Kremlin has long denied any relationship between Putin and Kabaeva, the WSJ added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The US sanction Russian Olympic champion Kabaeva, who many believe was one of Vladimir Putin\u2019s mistresses and mothers of his kids. The US wanted to sanction her months ago but feared this could trigger Russian escalation (like Russians erase Mariupol and rape Bucha once again). <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6AzlNJVIIq\">pic.twitter.com\/6AzlNJVIIq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sergej Sumlenny (@sumlenny) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sumlenny\/status\/1554561291775344643?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 2, 2022<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe Treasury Department will use every tool at our disposal to make sure that Russian elites and the Kremlin\u2019s enablers are held accountable for their complicity in a war that has cost countless lives.\u201d Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a press release. \u201cTogether with our allies, the United States will also continue to choke off revenue and equipment underpinning Russia\u2019s unprovoked war in Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">Kabaeva was previously sanctioned by the European Union in May, according to the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">The efficacy of U.S. and E.U. sanctions on Russia has been debated.
