It\u2019s a mystery and regardless of what it is, it can\u2019t be good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Why Make High-Risk Patients Sick Twice?<\/h2>\n<p>Rebound Covid post-Paxlovid raises a critical public health and drug safety concern. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov\/therapies\/antiviral-therapy\/ritonavir-boosted-nirmatrelvir--paxlovid-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NIH<\/a>, only high-risk populations are supposed to get Paxlovid, but taking Paxlovid sometimes opens those same high-risk patients to a rebound infection with Covid. In some cases, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/lung\/news\/20220630\/fauci-paxlovid-rebound-worse-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rebound Covid<\/a> symptoms are worse, placing the same high-risk patients in more severe danger.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One doesn\u2019t need to be a physician to know that having a high-risk patient get sick twice is worse than once.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why is Biden still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/07\/27\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-covid-19\/\">advocating<\/a> for Paxlovid\u2019s use, as recently as last week?\u00a0The White House doesn\u2019t have a political option. It must either a) admit failure or b) ignore public health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The White House foolishly chose to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/biden-pays-big-bucks-for-pfizers-latest-flop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pay Pfizer $10.6 billion<\/a> for Paxlovid, based on a highly preliminary \u201cpilot study\u201d showing nearly 90 percent effectiveness which later dissolved into its study failing and being voluntarily discontinued by Pfizer prior to its completion. Paxlovid failed its trial endpoints when compared to a placebo group. Perhaps the Biden White House didn\u2019t realize that informal preliminary pilot studies are never conclusive and \u201cresults\u201d need confirmation with a formal clinical trial.\u00a0Regardless, the White House did not wait until the formal trial was complete before committing $10.6 billion in taxpayer dollars. It\u2019s a $10.6 billion fortune down the drain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Spending Billions on a Questionable Drug<\/h2>\n<p>The White House\u2019s actions are inexcusable.<em>\u00a0<\/em>Not only do they refuse to acknowledge that the drug was a failure and that they had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zacharysmith\/2022\/01\/04\/biden-administration-doubles-orders-for-pfizers-anti-covid-pill-as-hospitals-run-short\/?sh=573aa749147e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prematurely and inappropriately spent a vast fortune on something ineffective and potentially dangerous<\/a>, but they\u00a0continue to promote Paxlovid\u2019s use!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rather than protecting patients, the White House is choosing to sacrifice the well-being of at-risk patients and promote a drug that Pfizer itself gave up on before the clinical trial was even completed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The actual rate of Paxlovid rebound is hard to know. First, Americans were told it was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/pharmacy\/paxlovid-rebound-symptoms-rare-mayo-study-finds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rare<\/a>,\u201d less than 1 percent. Then we were told it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2022.06.21.22276724v1\">5.4 percent<\/a>, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/health\/coronavirus\/what-is-paxlovid-rebound-and-how-common-is-it\/\">10 percent<\/a>.\u00a0On July 30, 2022, one CNN medical analyst and <a href=\"https:\/\/gwdocs.com\/profile\/jonathan-reiner\">professor at George Washington University<\/a> stated that with the newest Covid strain it is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JReinerMD\/status\/1553456040389246977\">likely 20-40 percent or even higher<\/a>.\u201d Anecdotal reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=twitter+paxlovid+rebound&#038;ei=TALnYp2MIIilqtsP8fybkAM&#038;start=10&#038;sa=N&#038;ved=2ahUKEwid4tDWlqT5AhWIkmoFHXH-BjIQ8tMDegQIARA5&#038;biw=1113&#038;bih=560&#038;dpr=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media<\/a> make it seem that a huge percentage of people who have taken Paxlovid have rebounded.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The silence of the CDC, FDA, NIH, and Dr. Fauci (who also had a rebound case after taking Paxlovid) is deafening, but unfortunately predictable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>A Similar Story to Vaccines and Boosters<\/h2>\n<p>In case this feels familiar, that\u2019s because it is. Americans have seen the exact same thing before regarding Covid-19 vaccine adverse effects. While the federal government scolded Americans for not getting vaccines and boosters, they simultaneously remained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/scolding-unvaccinated-left-biden-unprepared-omicron-opinion-1672805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">silent on adverse events<\/a> and deliberately <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/22\/cdc-tells-new-york-times-it-hid-covid-data-for-political-reasons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complacent<\/a> in suppressing them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even if Paxlovid was effective, do patients need it?\u00a0At this point, the same question goes for Covid-19 vaccines and boosters.\u00a0The dominant variants today typically produce a milder infection; most people get minimal to moderate\u00a0cold-like symptoms from Covid infections whether vaccinated or not.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also telling that many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/covid-19-vaccine-doses-once-in-high-demand-now-thrown-away-11657105202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Americans aren\u2019t interested in boosters<\/a>. If they had been shown to work, people would be taking them \u2014 but they haven\u2019t, so people aren\u2019t. In the U.S. alone, the government has been forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verifythis.com\/article\/news\/verify\/vaccines-verify\/covid-19-coronavirus-vaccine-doses-82-million-wastage-fact-check\/536-7c5c1e64-242b-4962-9ffe-013e5ea6ca71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">throw out more than 82 million vaccine\/booster doses<\/a>, yet Americans aren\u2019t dropping dead everywhere. Even leftist academic centers can\u2019t hide objective epidemiological evidence coming out of hospitals in recent months that illustrate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/data\/hospitalization-7-day-trend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">record lows<\/a>\u00a0in Covid-19-related hospital ICU admissions.<\/p>\n<h2>Digging Their Heels in Deeper<\/h2>\n<p>Despite all of that, the White House is still endlessly seeking to purchase more vaccines. By July 29, the White House had committed to purchasing a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2022\/07\/29\/biden-harris-administration-secures-66-million-doses-modernas-variant-specific-covid-19-vaccine-booster-for-potential-use-in-fall-winter-2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">171 million Covid-19 vaccine doses<\/a> for the new omicron mutations of Covid-19, despite having zero clinical trial evidence of safety or efficacy \u2014 e.g., exactly like they did with Paxlovid!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The combination of promoting endless boosters of an vaccine that fails to prevent infection or transmission, along with promoting Pfizer\u2019s Paxlovid despite its ineffectiveness and mysterious \u201crebound\u201d pharmacology, makes me wonder about something that I have thought about for a long time, especially as a former senior FDA official: <em>Is there some sort of unholy union between the FDA, Pfizer, and the Biden White House?<\/em>\u00a0Pfizer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/orgs\/pfizer-inc\/summary?id=D000000138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spends<\/a> millions in lobbying and campaign contributions. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/06\/27\/former-fda-commissioner-scott-gottlieb-joins-pfizers-board.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revolving door<\/a> with government health agencies is concerning. Would the Biden White House dare place Americans\u2019 public health at risk in the name of politics? I pray the answer is no and also hope that I am wrong, perhaps missing part of the story, but a compelling amount of data points to my suspicions being accurate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The White House needs to be more careful about funneling fortunes to Big Pharma for unproven, and possibly unsafe or unneeded, drugs. Americans should very carefully consider what they are hearing from the White House, its officials, and all federal alphabet agencies about the Paxlovid \u201cwonder drug.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/topics\/author\/david-gortler\">Dr. David Gortler<\/a> is a pharmacologist, pharmacist, and an FDA and health policy fellow at the <a href=\"https:\/\/eppc.org\/author\/david_gortler\/\">Ethics and Public Policy Center<\/a>.
