David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) is the projected winner in a three-way race for the Republican nomination in Arizona\u2019s newly created congressional District 1.<\/p>\n<p>With over 74 percent of precincts reporting in the Aug. 2 primary, Trump-endorsed Schweikert currently leads with 44 percent of the vote, while his closest opponent Elijah Norton trails with 34 percent.<\/p>\n<p>On the Democratic side, Jevin Hodge currently leads his rival Adam Metzendorf 62-38 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The winners will advance to the general election on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Schweikert launched his bid for re-election after he became embroiled in charges of ethics rules violations tied to campaign financing.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2020, he was fined $50,000 by the bipartisan House Ethics Committee after admitting to 11 rules breaches, including misuse of campaign funds.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2022, his campaign agreed to pay a $125,000 fine to the Federal Election Commission for campaign finance violations.<\/p>\n<p>He also faces a lawsuit by an Arizona man who claims he ran \u201chomophobic\u201d ads targeting Norton, who is pro-life.<\/p>\n<p>Schweikert has served as the U.S. representative for Arizona\u2019s congressional Districts 5 and 6 since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>In June, former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> endorsed Schweikert, calling him a \u201ctireless advocate for Arizona, a \u201cprincipled conservative\u201d and America First candidate.<\/p>\n<p>   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/author-allan-stein\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Follow<\/p>\n<p>Allan Stein is an Epoch Times reporter who covers the state of Arizona.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Embattled incumbent U.S. Rep.
