That is entirely understandable given their location and security needs,\u201d Hawley wrote for the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/feature\/why-i-won%E2%80%99t-vote-add-sweden-and-finland-nato-203925\">National Interest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the heads of state of both Nordic countries announced their intentions to join the 27-member military alliance. And last month, key NATO member Turkey announced that it received guarantees from Sweden and Finland and suggested it would block their bids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica\u2019s greatest foreign adversary doesn\u2019t loom over Europe. It looms in Asia. I am talking of course about the People\u2019s Republic of China,\u201d Hawley wrote. \u201cAnd when it comes to Chinese imperialism, the American people should know the truth: the United States is not ready to resist it. Expanding American security commitments in Europe now would only make that problem worse\u2014and America, less safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several members of NATO, including the United States, have yet to vote on ratifying the two countries into joining the military bloc. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he wants senators to vote on the matter before lawmakers leave Washington D.C. for a scheduled recess on Aug. 8.<\/p>\n<p> \u2018We Must Choose\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>A number of Republicans have publicly backed the two nations\u2019 bids to join NATO. In May, Hawley was among 11 GOP senators to vote against a\u00a0$40 billion Ukraine aid package that was eventually passed in Congress and signed into law.<\/p>\n<p>In his opinion article, the Missouri Republican said the United States doesn\u2019t have the ability to take on Russia and China at the same time.
