The decreases are largely due to uncertainty stemming from escalating tensions between the U.S. and China, and possible geopolitical risk emerging from the visit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stocks-markets-dow-update-08-02-2022-11659426098?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">according to<\/a> The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina will show her displeasure by ratcheting up retaliatory actions, but it won\u2019t get out of hand given its economy is weak,\u201d Rajeev De Mello, a global macro portfolio manager at GAMA Asset Management in Geneva, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-01\/pelosi-trip-starts-to-raise-angst-in-asia-s-currency-markets\">told<\/a> Bloomberg. \u201cHowever, the risk is if there is any military \u2018incident,\u2019 which could lead to an accidental military escalation, which would stress global financial markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Asia, Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng Index closed down 2.36% on the day while the Shanghai Composite Index was down 2.36% in anticipation of Pelosi\u2019s visit. In U.S. markets, the S&#038;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average were both down by close to 1% early Tuesday morning, but the S&#038;P 500 rallied back to being down 0.25% and the Dow to down 0.65% after Pelosi safely landed, according to Google data.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">U.S. stocks were off to a lower start Tuesday, with analysts blaming rising tensions between the U.S. and China as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi prepared to visit Taiwan.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MN89H3gqMP\">https:\/\/t.co\/MN89H3gqMP<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HLtQAtLvIU\">pic.twitter.com\/HLtQAtLvIU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MarketWatch (@MarketWatch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarketWatch\/status\/1554463492585005057?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 2, 2022<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The seasonal timing of Pelosi\u2019s visit also exacerbates the reverberations through financial markets, Mark Vitner, managing director and senior economist at Wells Fargo, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAugust almost always seems to bring geopolitical crises,\u201d Vitner said. \u201cThe markets are generally thin, as many traders in the U.S. and Europe are on vacation, so events like these tend to lead to more volatility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One outlier to the the sagging markets are defense companies.
