(Oh, and multiple-murderers.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019m not going to lie; I was a fan of the series and would recommend it to friends and families. However, I\u2019m unsure about the messaging regarding bronzing the two characters and celebrating the series so openly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not only is it odd in general, but in a state that has historically and continues to struggle with drug overdoses and the crime surrounding the drug use epidemic, it seems a bit tone-deaf. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Stars from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are in Albuquerque today for the unveiling of the Walter White and Jesse Pinkman statues. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ygOScQAIyM\">pic.twitter.com\/ygOScQAIyM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Benavidez (@ProfBenavidez) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProfBenavidez\/status\/1553118986757234688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 29, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So let\u2019s take a closer look at the state known as the Land of Enchantment and its sordid history with drugs and statues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/george-floyd-bust-on-display-in-nyc-just-months-after-demands-to-remove-teddy-roosevelt-thomas-jefferson-statues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Floyd Bust On Display In NYC, Just Months After Demands To Remove Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson Statues<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not So Much Enchanting As Deadly<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New Mexico was its own character in the hit show \u201cBreaking Bad.\u201d And while I\u2019ve been to the state numerous times and enjoyed Albuquerque and other cities when I would visit, the show highlighted perhaps the most unsavory aspect of this southwest beauty.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"subscribe\" class=\"email-signup inarticle\">\n<h4>Support Conservative Voices!<\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Sign up to receive the latest<\/strong> political news, insight, and commentary delivered directly to your inbox.<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Over the last three decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/trending\/breaking-bad-meth-duo-honored-with-bronze-statue-albuquerque\/4A7HWZID55DSXHPCXTWSQHS3E4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roughly 43,000 deaths<\/a> in the state have been attributed to alcohol and drug overdoses. However, the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in 2020 was attributed to meth, fentanyl, and prescription opioids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A border state, New Mexico, saw an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-new-mexico-6ba699428d4c9d79b7c05ea4a9597d66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase in fentanyl-related deaths<\/a> between 2019 and 2020 that hit 129%. Last year fentanyl and meth surpassed heroin and prescription opioids as the state\u2019s leading cause of overdose deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The director of \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/31\/breaking-bad-statues-unveiled-in-albuquerque\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vince Gilligan<\/a>, admitted given this background that \u201ctwo fictional, infamous meth dealers\u201d won\u2019t be \u201cuniversally cherished in New Mexico.\u201d Specifically, he said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIn all seriousness, no doubt some folks are going to say, \u2018Wow, just what our city needed.\u2019 And I get that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, he goes on to state:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI see two of the finest actors America has ever produced. I see them, in character, as two larger than life tragic figures, cautionary tales.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Breaking Bad statue? I could write a whole separate article just on that statement. However, it\u2019s fair to take some time to look at how this show and this statue might help the state\u2019s economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New Mexico estimates that the \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d franchise has made a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/amphtml\/breaking-bronze-walt-jesse-unveiled-040100007.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$385 million<\/a> economic impact. An apparent influence when it comes to the unveiling of the statues given that New Mexico has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governing.com\/work\/new-mexico-has-the-highest-unemployment-rate-in-the-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest unemployment rate<\/a> in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s also important to note that taxpayer dollars didn\u2019t go into making the statutes. Instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/albuquerque-breaking-bad-bronze-statue-1390403\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony Picture Television<\/a> commissioned the bronze \u2018artwork.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So Albuquerque can have their Breaking Bad statues but Here in Detroit we can\u2019t find a place for our RoboCop statue? That\u2019s bullshit. <br \/>That is bullshit! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kshhpwFp1z\">https:\/\/t.co\/kshhpwFp1z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 *NotThePopularOpinion (@Only_Grey) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Only_Grey\/status\/1553138039412629504?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 29, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New Mexico Republican state representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.q13fox.com\/news\/breaking-bad-statues-unveiled-in-albuquerque-amid-states-drug-crime-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rod Montoya<\/a> said of the show\u2019s influence and the statues:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI\u2019m glad New Mexico got the business, but really? We\u2019re going down the road of literally glorifying meth makers?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This comment is of particular significance for New Mexico, given its recent controversy and removal of a bronze statue that was a nod to the state\u2019s history. A statue of Spanish conquistador Juan de Onate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Glorifying What Now?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Juan de Onate is known for the Spanish colonization of New Mexico and was its first colonial Governor. History tells us that de Onate was a cruel man known for massacring large swathes of Native Americans. However, there are similar arguments that he played a vital role in shaping the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To Native Americans from the state, he is viewed as a tyrant. However, for many New Mexico Hispanics, the belief is the state wouldn\u2019t have the unique hybrid of cultures if it weren\u2019t for Spaniards like de Onate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/07\/11\/890000884\/who-was-juan-de-o-ate-a-look-at-the-conquistadors-violent-legacy-in-new-mexico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State Historian Rob Martinez<\/a> explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSomeone might look at the statue and say, \u2018I see the beginning of Hispanic culture. I see the Spanish language being brought. I see Catholicism starting here.\u2019 But someone else will look at it and say, \u2018I see my religion being suppressed. I see my culture being eliminated. I see my ancestors being forced to work and pay tribute.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The sculptor of the de Onate piece, <a href=\"https:\/\/wfuv.org\/content\/statues-conquistador-juan-de-o%C3%B1ate-come-down-new-mexico-wrestles-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reynaldo Rivera,<\/a> voiced what is often viewed as controversial language touching on the idea that all lives matter, stating after his work\u2019s removal:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIndian lives matter. But also my people, Hispanic lives, matter. I matter. My art matters. And I\u2019m pissed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I don\u2019t blame you, Mr. Rivera. There have also been calls to take such action as <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/washington-post-runs-article-demanding-george-washington-university-change-its-name-because-of-white-supremacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renaming George Washington University<\/a> since our first President was an \u201censlaver of men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While my old alma mater is keeping its name, they did announce earlier this year that they will be getting rid of the \u201cColonials\u201d moniker since it \u201cglorifies\u201d colonialism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/06\/15\/gwu-colonials-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A report<\/a> on the change notes a similar trend to what the New Mexico historian touches on, the duality of issues:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFor supporters, the term refers to those who lived in the colonies, especially those who fought for independence against England and, with bravery, courage, and against all odds, secured democracy for the United States. For opponents, \u2018Colonials\u2019 mean colonizers (both here and abroad) and refers to those who stole land from indigenous groups, plundered their resources, murdered and exiled Native peoples, and introduced slavery into the colonies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Weird how in a free country, some people disagree with each other on issues and symbols. Wonder what the appropriate reaction should be to such a clash of ideas?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There have been too many examples of statues of the Founding Fathers and other historical figures being torn down to list them all here, but just a sampling:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The New York City City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/15\/nyregion\/thomas-jefferson-statue-nyc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removed a statute of Thomas Jefferson<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The statue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/21\/arts\/design\/roosevelt-statue-to-be-removed-from-museum-of-natural-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teddy Roosevelt is set to be<\/a> removed from the Museum of Natural History<\/li>\n<li>In Portland, left-wing extremists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/local\/protesters-tore-down-3-statues-of-us-presidents-in-portland-last-year\/283-c7dca7bd-ed38-47e1-a492-f0cccd6b9c2e#:~:text=%E2%80%94%20In%20the%20midst%20of%20last,Abraham%20Lincoln%20and%20Theodore%20Roosevelt.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tore down statues of George Washington<\/a>, Abraham Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt<\/li>\n<li>In Madison, Wisconsin, left-wing extremists <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/blm-vandals-destroy-statue-of-anti-slavery-activist-and-immigrant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tore down a statue of Hans Christian Heg<\/a>, a Norwegian immigrant and abolitionist who died in the Civil War leading the 15th Wisconsin Infantry regiment<\/li>\n<li>Also in Madison, students petitioned to remove an iconic statue of Abraham Lincoln. The <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/wisconsin-college-students-demand-lincoln-statue-be-torn-down-because-while-he-was-anti-slavery-he-wasnt-pro-black\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leader of the Black Student Union<\/a> explained, \u201cI just think he did, you know, some good things \u2026 the bad things that he\u2019s done definitely outweighs them.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Renaming institutions &#038; removing statues of Founding Fathers is still very trendy. Check out my response to a fellow alum&#8217;s call to change <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GWU?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GWU<\/a> name because <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GeorgeWashington?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GeorgeWashington<\/a> was an &#8216;enslaver of men&#8217;. \ud83d\ude44 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPInsidr?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TPInsidr<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EWIQ0qctp3\">https:\/\/t.co\/EWIQ0qctp3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kat (@KatBeauVic) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KatBeauVic\/status\/1526610459029282816?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 17, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Is the correct answer to remove whatever happens to offend a particular side to soothe their feelings? Or is the correct answer to engage in civic debate and discourse touching on historical context and impact?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Will anyone demand the removal of these statues of fictional drug dealers?\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I Sleep Just Fine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All in all, I don\u2019t care about this \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d statue in Albuquerque. In the words of the main character from the show, Walter White, I sleep just fine despite the silly statue erected in a city plagued with drug use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, I think this is an interesting example of what we value and what offends our sensitive natures in this country. When debate kicked off about the de Onate statue, professor of Native American and American Studies and the University of New Mexico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/07\/13\/890122729\/statues-of-conquistador-juan-de-o-ate-come-down-as-new-mexico-wrestles-with-hist#:~:text=Twitter-,Statues%20Of%20Conquistador%20Juan%20De%20O%C3%B1ate%20Come,New%20Mexico%20Wrestles%20With%20History&#038;text=via%20Getty%20Images-,Channing%20Concho%2C%20left%2C%20and%20American%20Horse%20photograph%20themselves%20in%20front,June%2016%2C%202020%20in%20Albuquerque.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melanie Yazzie<\/a> said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThese monuments glorify colonialism, and they have really erased the history of native resistance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I would argue that the \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d statues glorify drug use and erase the trauma felt by families plagued by overdose deaths. But, you do what you want, New Mexico.
