allies in Congress are pushing a big tax-and-spend bill right now, even after we\u2019ve entered a recession. The so-called \u201cInflation Reduction Act,\u201d which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/2022\/07\/28\/inflation-reduction-act-2-reasons-bidens-bill-is-a-sick-joke\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>won\u2019t do anything to reduce inflation<\/span><\/a><span>, does include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/2022\/07\/31\/inflation-reduction-act-massive-tax-hike-on-workers\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>plenty of tax hikes<\/span><\/a><span>\/crackdowns, such as a huge corporate tax increase and funding for an Internal Revenue Service expansion to squeeze more money out of Americans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They\u2019re probably pushing this plan with political, not economic, motivations in mind, desperate for some type of legislative win ahead of the 2022 midterms. But in proposing tax increases during a recession, the Democrats are directly contradicting their own stances in the past.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are 3 prominent Democrats who are on the record opposing tax increases during a recession, as I\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJasonSmith\/status\/1552755142511976448\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>first saw pointed out<\/span><\/a><span> by GOP Rep. Jason Smith of Missouri. (A partisan\/biased source, yes, but I\u2019ve gone back and verified the quotes from all their original sources).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Barack Obama<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>In a 2009 interview with MSNBC, former President Barack Obama <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2011\/10\/obama-no-different-today-on-taxes\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>insisted<\/span><\/a><span> that \u201c<\/span><b>the last thing you want to do is to raise taxes in the middle of a recession<\/b><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"_ytid_33520\" data-origwidth=\"696\" data-origheight=\"391\" data-facadesrc=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fmfXE6if4DQ?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=0&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__ epyt-facade epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" data-epautoplay=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"epyt-facade-poster\" alt=\"YouTube player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/maxresdefault.jpg\" \/><button class=\"epyt-facade-play\" aria-label=\"Play\"><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><b>2. Chuck Schumer<\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>The Senate Majority Leader is throwing his full weight behind the Biden-Manchin plan. Yet Schumer has in the past explicitly criticized the notion of raising taxes during a recession.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atr.org\/authors\/john-kartch\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>John Kartch<\/span><\/a><span> notes for Americans for Tax Reform, Schumer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atr.org\/flashback-schumer-opposed-all-tax-hikes-in-a-recession\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in 2008: \u201cIf we\u2019re in a recession and we\u2019re in a difficult economic time, I don\u2019t think Sen. Obama or anyone else is going to raise any taxes. <\/span><b>You don\u2019t want to take money out of the economy when the economy is shrinking.\u201d<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Joe Manchin<\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>Senator Joe Manchin, himself the chief architect of the Democrats\u2019 latest plan, has repeatedly denounced the notion of hiking taxes during a period of economic decline. Again per Americans for Tax Reform, Manchin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atr.org\/flashback-schumer-opposed-all-tax-hikes-in-a-recession\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>said<\/span><\/a> <span>in 2010, <\/span><b>\u201cI don\u2019t think during a time of recession you mess with any of the taxes, or increase any taxes.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"_ytid_72585\" data-origwidth=\"696\" data-origheight=\"391\" data-facadesrc=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S2_obc8lBi0?enablejsapi=1&#038;autoplay=0&#038;cc_load_policy=0&#038;cc_lang_pref=&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;loop=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;playsinline=0&#038;autohide=2&#038;theme=dark&#038;color=red&#038;controls=1&#038;\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__ epyt-facade epyt-is-override  no-lazyload\" data-epautoplay=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"epyt-facade-poster\" alt=\"YouTube player\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/S2_obc8lBi0\/maxresdefault.jpg\" \/><button class=\"epyt-facade-play\" aria-label=\"Play\"><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><b>The Democrats\u2019 Hypocrisy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>When you compare the words of these prominent Democrats to the party\u2019s actions today, the hypocrisy becomes clear. What would they say in defense of themselves?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Well, Joe Manchin has, rather absurdly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8dTzSQtNeJE\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>argued<\/span><\/a><span> that their legislation \u201cdoes not raise taxes\u201d and only \u201ccloses loopholes.\u201d This argument is either remarkably ignorant or deeply disingenuous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Manchin and company also say that their plan will increase tax revenue by more than $700 billion. Yes, $700 billion more will come into Uncle Sam\u2019s coffers, they claim. But all without raising taxes!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Um\u2026 you can\u2019t raise hundreds of billions in new revenue without raising taxes. <\/span><b>That\u2019s not how math works.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Some of what they\u2019re doing could arguably be categorized as \u201cclosing loopholes,\u201d but certainly not all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201ccorporate minimum tax\u201d included that\u2019s expected to raise $315 billion very explicitly raises taxes on corporations. It does away with the current system\u2014where some corporations are lawfully not owing much in taxes due to intentional exemptions like those promoting investment write-offs\u2014and implements a new flat-minimum rate of 15%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>It\u2019s very explicitly an increase in their taxes owed<\/b><span>, not just an increase in enforcement or crackdown on tax evasion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>This is a Tax on Workers, Too<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>It\u2019s not just Big Business that\u2019s getting hit with a tax hike. While corporate taxes are formally levied on businesses, economists agree that a big portion of the tax will be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/2022\/07\/31\/inflation-reduction-act-massive-tax-hike-on-workers\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>borne by workers<\/span><\/a><span> via lower wages. When you factor this reality in, the Democrats\u2019 legislation would, in practice, raise taxes on typical American families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-schumer-manchin-tax-increase-on-everyone-wages-manufacturers-jct-democrats-income-salaries-corporate-rate-11659300317?st=6dxyah8ju3dhblv&#038;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>According<\/span><\/a><span> to the <\/span><i><span>Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><span>, \u201c<\/span><b>average tax rates will increase for nearly every income category in 2023 under the bill<\/b><span>. Taxes will rise by $16.7 billion in 2023 on Americans earning less than $200,000 a year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>There\u2019s No Escaping This Hypocrisy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>Joe Manchin and his fellow Democrats can try their very best to spin their plan as something other than what it is. But the undeniable reality remains that the \u201cInflation Reduction Act\u201d would hike Americans\u2019 taxes during a recession.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s not just economically foolish.
