Kevin Stitt signed the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us\/cf_pdf\/2021-22%20ENR\/SB\/SB2%20ENR.PDF\">Save Women\u2019s Sports Act<\/a>\u201d into law last March, which designates sports teams to be based on athletes\u2019 biological sex assigned at birth. The requirement applies from kindergarten through college.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhen it comes to sports and athletics, girls should compete against girls. Boys should compete against boys,\u201d Stitt\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/governor\/newsroom\/newsroom\/2022\/march2022\/governor-stitt-signs--save-women-s-sports-act--into-law.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. \u201cAnd let\u2019s be very clear \u2014 that\u2019s all this bill says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Erin Mason, executive director at the abortion and reproductive rights organization Reproaction, shared on Thursday an affidavit from Woodall Public School in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, on her social media page, which began making news headlines over the weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cDo you understand what is happening? This has nothing to do with encouraging girls to be athletes,\u201d Woodall said. \u201cThis is totalitarianism. It is the white nationalist agenda. The anti-LGBTQ agenda. The anti-abortion agenda. It is all the same agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is real. Those under 18 can have their parent or guardian sign the document. Once the student turns 18 years old, they must sign the affidavit themselves.\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Student-athletes must sign an affidavit before each school year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Other Oklahoma public schools have begun creating similar forms for students looking to participate in sports.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to do this \u2014 we\u2019re going to abide by the law,\u201d Pat Dodson, superintendent of Grove Public Schools, told <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.koamnewsnow.com\/oklahoma-schools-now-require-biological-sex-affidavit-for-student-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">KOAM News Now<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. \u201cBut I do think it\u2019s just a little bit too much, and it\u2019s an overreach on behalf of our legislators.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last year the Department of Education issued guidance saying it would interpret Title IX, which protects students in federally funded schools from sex-based discrimination, to include discrimination based on \u2018gender identity\u2019 and sexual orientation rather than strictly biological markers of sex.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nina Short, a co-founder of Four-States Youth For Equality, told KOAM News Now that the bill defies federal law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNot only are they not accepted and safe at home, but they go to school, and they\u2019re not safe or accepted there,\u201d Short said. \u201cAnd that just further shows that they\u2019re not accepted that they are discriminated against.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cTitle IX was put in place, and it does not allow sexual discrimination of any kind,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona told\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/31566391\/us-secretary-education-miguel-cardona-backs-transgender-athletes-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ESPN<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0he believes in local and state control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, the department has \u201ca responsibility to protect the civil rights of students, and if we feel the civil rights are being violated, we will act.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cardona also said girls competing in high school sports have 1.3 million fewer opportunities than boys.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAnd we know at the college level \u2014 it\u2019s probably similar,\u201d Cardona said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">State Senator Julie Daniels (R-OK) said during the signing of the \u201cSave Women\u2019s Sports Act\u201d earlier this year that five decades of Title IX would quickly become undone if sports teams allow \u201cjust a few biological males\u201d to win awards designed for women.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oklahoma joined 18 other states that have passed legislation banning transgender athletes from competing in sports based.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student-athletes competing on Oklahoma public school sports teams must now complete a \u201cbiological sex affidavit\u201d to determine whether they are eligible.
