Amid China\u2019s threats, President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/20\/military-pelosi-trip-taiwan-not-good-idea-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> reporters July 20 that the U.S. military thought it was \u201cnot a good idea\u201d for Pelosi to go through with making Taiwan a stop on her trip, which includes diplomatic events in South Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>Hu Xijin, former editor-in-chief of the Global Times (a CCP-controlled publication), later fanned the flames by sending a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/08\/01\/china-issues-direct-threat-pelosi-taiwan-asia-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now-deleted tweet<\/a> suggesting the CCP should consider Pelosi\u2019s trip an \u201cinvasion\u201d if she is escorted by the U.S. military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf US fighter jets escort Pelosi\u2019s plane into Taiwan, it is invasion,\u201d tweeted Xijun. \u201cThe PLA (People\u2019s Liberation Army) has the right to forcibly dispel Pelosi\u2019s plane and the US fighter jets, including firing warning shots and making the tactical movement of obstruction. If ineffective, then shoot them down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s Sunday press release <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/newsroom\/73122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announcing<\/a> the members and itinerary for the congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific region did not include a stop in Taiwan. However, U.S. and Taiwanese officials confirmed Pelosi has plans to stop in Taipei overnight, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/08\/01\/politics\/nancy-pelosi-taiwan-visit\/index.html?utm_term=link&#038;utm_content=2022-08-01T10%3A37%3A26&#038;utm_source=twcnnbrk&#038;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Economist and Asia Times <a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/author\/spengler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">columnist<\/a> David P. Goldman said in a tweet Monday that a former U.N. ambassador warned that if Pelosi traveled to Taiwan, China may view her trip as a violation of a 1972 U.S.-China diplomatic agreement, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fapa.org\/shanghai-communique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shanghai Communique<\/a>, and respond accordingly. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/08\/01\/biden-john-kirby-taiwan-policy-nancy-pelosi-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018Do Not Support\u2019: Biden Official Reaffirms Taiwan Policy Ahead Of Pelosi Trip)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the Nixon administration, the U.S. forged ahead with easing tensions and improving diplomatic relations with China, <a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2018\/07\/nixons-china-sell-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">including<\/a> the U.S. agreeing to stay out of the dispute over Taiwan\u2019s independence. Since the agreement, the U.S. has followed the \u201cOne China\u201d policy in which the U.S. acknowledges there is only one Chinese government controlling several islands. The U.S., however, has continued to foster a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/u-s-relations-with-taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">robust unofficial relationship<\/a>\u201d with Taiwan for decades, according to a Department of State fact sheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust so it\u2019s clear,\u201d Goldman tweeted. \u201cPelosi is Constitutionally 2nd in line to POTUS, so this is a state visit from the standpoint of diplomatic protocol. That, as a former US UN ambassador told me, is a clear violation of the \u201972 Shanghai Communique. Goldman (@davidpgoldman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidpgoldman\/status\/1554147701239037954?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The PLA released a video <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/29\/chinese-army-prepare-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">encouraging<\/a> Chinese citizens to \u201cprepare for war\u201d on the Chinese social media app Weibo, which received 300,000 positive reactions within 12 hours of its posting Friday, the state-run Global Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must bear in mind the fundamental responsibility of preparing for war and charge on the journey of a strong army,\u201d the PLA\u2019s 80th Group Army reportedly stated.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/china-warns-its-military-will-not-sit-idly-by-if-pelosi-visits-taiwan-2022-08-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> reporters during a regular briefing Monday that Pelosi visiting Taiwan would result in \u201cstrong countermeasures,\u201d Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to tell the U.S. once again that China is standing by, and the Chinese People\u2019s Liberation Army will never sit idly by,\u201d Lijian reportedly said. \u201cChina will take resolute responses and strong countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. As for what measures, if she dares to go, then let\u2019s wait and see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby warned Monday that China seems to be preparing to respond to Pelosi\u2019s planned trip by \u201cpositioning itself\u201d for possible \u201cmilitary provocations,\u201d Business Insider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/china-missiles-possible-nancy-pelosi-taiwan-visit-white-house-2022-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. Kirby told reporters that China\u2019s response could include \u201cfiring missiles in the Taiwan Strait or around Taiwan\u201d and \u201coperations that break historical norms, such as large-scale air entry into Taiwan\u2019s air defense identification zone,\u201d according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Former American Enterprise Institute Jeane Kirkpatrick Visiting Fellow Michael Beckley and American Enterprise Institute senior fellow Hal Brands wrote that China goes to war with adversaries perceived to be attacking its sovereign territory in a piece in The Atlantic titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/11\/us-china-war\/620571\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What Will Drive China to War?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be clear, every decision for war is complex, and factors including domestic politics and the personality quirks of individual leaders have also figured in China\u2019s choices to fight,\u201d the two wrote in October 2021. \u201cYet the overarching pattern of behavior is consistent: Beijing turns violent when confronted with the prospect of permanently losing control of territory. It tends to attack one enemy to scare off others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican Florida Rep. Mike Waltz, a retired Green Beret commander, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/if-china-threats-pelosi-lead-actual-harm-declaration-war-republican\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> Fox News on Friday that if China responds to Pelosi\u2019s trip by shooting down her plane, the U.S. must take it as an act of war. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/13\/taiwan-josh-hawley-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018We Must Arm Taiwan\u2019: Hawley Spearheads Effort To Thwart Chinese Aggression)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Waltz said China\u2019s threats against Pelosi were \u201cunacceptable\u201d and the Biden administration needs to \u201cmake it clear that should any harm come to Speaker Pelosi and her trip to Taiwan, it\u2019s tantamount to a declaration of war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Director of MIT\u2019s Security Studies Program M. Taylor Fravel <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fravel\/status\/1554181532906127361?s=20&#038;t=E189l9fmaThlcsKLKCUU-g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warned<\/a> on Twitter that China\u2019s response to Pelosi visiting Taiwan \u201cwill almost certainly include a military component,\u201d like \u201clive fire exercises, a much greater military presence within the Taiwan Strait and [especially] across \u2018the median line,\u2019 even missile tests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe response will also include economic and diplomatic actions, probably mostly targeting Taiwan,\u201d Fravel <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fravel\/status\/1554181535464656896?s=20&#038;t=E189l9fmaThlcsKLKCUU-g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cThe response will likely unfold over days if not weeks, but likely start after Pelosi departs Taiwan. Taylor Fravel (@fravel) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fravel\/status\/1554181537393934337?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Fravel <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fravel\/status\/1554181539843522564?s=20&#038;t=E189l9fmaThlcsKLKCUU-g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">added<\/a> that although\u00a0it\u2019s likely that China\u2019s goal is to show force \u201cwithout sparking escalation,\u201d China\u2019s increased \u201cmilitary component\u201d in an area with \u201csignificant U.S. naval assets\u201d allows a \u201cpotential for miscalculation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.K.\u2019s national security adviser, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/stephen-lovegrove\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sir Stephen Lovegrove<\/a>, said during a Friday speech that backdoor channels between China and western countries, like the U.S. and the U.K., have dissolved to the point of an increased potential for war, including nuclear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the cold war, we benefited from a series of negotiations and dialogues that improved our understanding of Soviet doctrine and capabilities, and vice versa.
