This increase is largely due to elevated prices across the economy, the WSJ reported, as the Consumer Price Index (CPI)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/13\/inflation-americans-cpi-squeeze-joe-biden\/\">surged<\/a> 9.1% year-over-year in June, and the food-at-home index outpaced even that at 10.4% year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p>As of mid-June about 90% of Americans were concerned by rising food prices, and 52% reported making fewer trips to the grocery store to cope, <a href=\"https:\/\/theharrispoll.com\/briefs\/covid-19-tracker-wave-120\/\">according to<\/a> The Harris Poll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">As a result dollar stores are experiencing marked increases in foot traffic as an alternative, with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.placer.ai\/the-square\/quarterly-indexes\/dollar-stores\/\">data compiled<\/a> by Placer.ai suggesting that the industry\u2019s locations had 20% more weekly visits in the second quarter of 2022 than during the same time pre-pandemic in 2019. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/08\/01\/neel-kashkari-federal-reserve-inflation-economy\/\">(RELATED: \u2018Higher Than We Expect\u2019: Top Fed Official Issues Grim Prediction On Reining In Inflation)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Dollar General\u2019s core demographic is households with incomes under $40,000 a year, those making more have also begun to shift to the chain, CEO Todd Vasos said on an earnings call in late April, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/08\/business\/dollar-stores-inflation\/index.html#:~:text=Dollar%20Tree&#039;s%2025%25%20price%20hike,new%20customers%20seeking%20cheaper%20alternatives.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to<\/a>\u00a0CNN Business.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cShopping patterns are definitely changing, and we\u2019re seeing it happen right before our eyes,\u201d Vasos said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Dollar General says inflation has led to more visits from lower-income shoppers, trade down by wealthier shoppers and consumers shopping at stores closer to their homes to save gas. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LLiEfxuytY\">https:\/\/t.co\/LLiEfxuytY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nathaniel Meyersohn (@nmeyersohn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nmeyersohn\/status\/1534894617585504263?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 9, 2022<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But many of those relying on dollar stores for their sustenance express concern about the nutritional value of the goods they\u2019re getting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xbvutc-Paragraph e3t0jlg0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cEverything in there is super-duper sweet,\u201d Phoenix Kamlo, a tailor and head of a family of five in Wichita, Kansas, told the WSJ. \u201cBut it\u2019s nearby, and it\u2019s cheap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">Dollar stores are likely to exacerbate existing diet-related health disparities, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cspinet.org\/sites\/default\/files\/attachment\/Dollar%20Store%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf\">fact sheet<\/a> from the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Roughly 2,300 Dollar Generals across the country currently stock fresh produce out of more than 18,000 total locations, a Dollar General spokeswoman told the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">Dollar Tree sees itself as complementing, not replacing grocery stores, a spokesperson for the chain told the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWhen dollar stores can sell products at half the price, of course most low-income, working rural folks plus everyone dealing with higher costs are going to choose them over more expensive options \u2014 even though the local options would be healthier and support the local economy,\u201d Nick Cartwright, a rural organizer and state senate candidate concerned with how dollar stores have been affecting nutrition and farmers in his home state of Arkansas, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s Food and Nutrition Office did not immediately respond to the DCNF\u2019s request for comment.
