A network issue caused a day-long outage in early July that affected some payment services but the issue has since been fixed.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The July 14 Facebook post claims the entire banking system in Canada, a country of more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/71-607-x\/71-607-x2018005-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">38 million<\/a>, has been shut down. \u201cY\u2019all better start taking y\u2019all money out these banks smh they already shut down Canada entire banking system this is their start on One Government banking system #ImJustTheMessenger,\u201d reads the post.<\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence to suggest the country\u2019s banking system has been shut down. Check Your Fact found no such announcement on the website of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/newsroom\/news\/archive.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Bank of Canada<\/a> (RBC), the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/b\/bigfivebanks.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">largest bank<\/a>. There are likewise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=canada+banking+system+shut+down&#038;source=lnms&#038;tbm=nws&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwiYzYqb4KX5AhWME1kFHdtLBjwQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&#038;biw=1440&#038;bih=821&#038;dpr=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no credible news reports<\/a> suggesting a controlled shutdown took place recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not accurate,\u201d Gillian McArdle, a spokesperson for RBC, told Check Your Fact via email. \u201cFrom an RBC perspective, we are operational and actively serving our clients.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/06\/15\/fact-check-images-boy-stole-75-billion-swiss-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Image Claims To Show Young Boy Who Stole $75 Billion From A Swiss Bank)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Carole Saindon, a spokesperson for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfi-bsif.gc.ca\/Eng\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada<\/a>, agreed with McArdle. \u201cThe information in the July 14 FaceBook post you reference is incorrect,\u201d said Saindon in an email to Check Your Fact. \u2018There has never been a significant system-wide service interruption affecting Canada\u2019s banks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The claim may be related to a day-long telecommunications outage that occurred in Canada on July 8. The Canadian telecommunications company Rogers experienced a \u201cnetwork outage across both wireless and wireline services,\u201d according to a FAQ on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rogers.com\/support\/info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.
