When even parks and playgrounds are padlocked, life becomes a living hell for young children and their parents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And non-COVID trends hit hard, especially in Gotham, as the cumulative effect of Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s policies and the state\u2019s heavy-handed criminal-justice \u201creforms\u201d saw crime jumping from its historic lows. City homicides rose 46.5% in 2021 over 2014 (the year Blas took over);<strong> <\/strong>car thefts up 35.8%; felony assaults up 13%. No one wants to raise a family in <em>that<\/em> environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio\u2019s war on excellence in public education hurt, too: Crucially, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/10\/08\/nyc-to-phase-out-gifted-and-talented-program\/\">he cut back Gifted and Talented classes<\/a> and engineered the end of selective admissions to middle and high schools in several districts \u2014 leaving his successor a cockamamie system for the whole city that\u2019s directed countless kids this fall to schools they never wanted. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Making the public-school system a viable option for middle- and working-class families was probably Mayor Michael Bloomberg\u2019s finest achievement. De Blasio made tens of thousands of parents who invested in a future here into suckers. <\/p>\n<p>He also did his best to choke public charter schools, which offer a quality education to low-income families even in the city\u2019s toughest \u2018hoods. <\/p>\n<p>Heck, he made even the not-good schools worse, eviscerating the discipline code and overseeing a drastic drop in school safety systemwide. It was all in the name of \u201cequity,\u201d but it only made things worse for all children. <\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams and Chancellor David Banks are <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/09\/chancellor-banks-moving-ahead-with-nyc-school-budget-task-force\/\">trying to undo de Blasio\u2019s public-school disasters<\/a>, but it\u2019s slow-going so far \u2014 and families have to fear that the next mayor will pull the rug out from under them again. Trust is very hard to rebuild. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All this, while <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/27\/nyc-plans-to-fight-rat-problem-by-limiting-hours-trash-bags-can-sit-on-streets\/\">trash piles up<\/a> and mentally ill homeless <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/16\/hobo-builds-house-on-the-manhattan-bridge\/\">camp in the subways and streets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And so city public schools lost some 73,000 students since the start of the pandemic, and are on track to lose many more. Who\u2019s going to start a family here now if they have alternatives, or stay once the kids turn 3 or so?<\/p>\n<p>A city with fewer children will be harsher and colder, lacking <em>joie de vivre<\/em> and laughter. And fewer families means less investment in the city\u2019s future among residents, which leads to further deterioration in quality of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New York needs its families to survive.
