This economic [two-plus-two] is, as it were, a compass for realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific,\u201d Hagiuda remarked.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries did not immediately release additional details of their plans, but Japan\u2019s Nikkei Shimbun newspaper said the hub would be set up in Japan by the end of this year to research 2-nanometer semiconductor chips.<\/p>\n<p>The United States is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/south-korea-given-deadline-to-join-us-led-chip-alliance-amid-mounting-pressure-from-beijing_4609593.html\">pursuing semiconductor<\/a> cooperation with South Korea through the \u201cChip 4\u201d alliance framework, in which Taiwan and Japan have agreed to participate.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan now makes the vast majority of semiconductors under 10 nanometers, but there is concern about supply stability if tensions worsen further between Taiwan and China, which views the island as a renegade province.<\/p>\n<h2>Countering Threats<\/h2>\n<p>The two allies also issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/joint-statement-of-the-u-s-japan-economic-policy-consultative-committee-strengthening-economic-security-and-the-rules-based-order\/\">a joint statement<\/a> in which they reaffirmed their commitment to \u201ccountering threats to economic security and the rules-based international economic order,\u201d and vowed to make their economies \u201cmore competitive and resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They aim to \u201cdeepen discussions and foster cooperation among like-minded partners\u201d while calling on all major economies to adhere to international rules and obligations, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Blinken said the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war had shown the vulnerability of critical supply chains, while \u201ca growing number of countries\u201d were struggling with debt burdens due to \u201cunsustainable and non-transparent lending practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coercive and retaliatory economic practices of the People\u2019s Republic of China force countries into choices that compromise their security, their intellectual property, their economic independence,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/opening-remarks-with-secretary-of-commerce-gina-m-raimondo-and-japanese-foreign-minister-hayashi-yoshimasa-and-minister-of-economy-trade-and-industry-hagiuda-koichi\/\">told reporters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The United States and Japan pledged to coordinate with other like-minded partners to address \u201ceconomic coercion, effectively confront non-market policies and practices, and deliver calibrated messaging to the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the world\u2019s first and third largest economies, it is critical that we work together to defend a rules-based international economic order, one in which all countries can participate, compete, and prosper,\u201d Blinken said.<\/p>\n<p>The United States and other nations have previously denounced Beijing for using \u201cdebt-trap diplomacy\u201d to lure countries into its Belt and Road Initiative, which was launched by Chinese leader Xi Jinping in 2013 to increase Beijing\u2019s trade
