The number of things lawmakers don\u2019t read is pretty shocking. They just vote yes or no and call it a day.<\/p>\n<p>To put how scary this is into perspective, in 2021, over 9,800 bills were submitted to congress. Eighty-five of these bills were signed into law. Some of them had an extremely large price tag, and it\u2019s safe to say that many elected officials didn\u2019t even read them before voting on them. Also in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/adamandrzejewski\/2021\/01\/28\/why-is-it-controversial-to-ask-congress-to-read-the-bill\/?sh=6bd8fba95a55\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a> noticed the hesitance of politicians to even talk about having to read the bill, noting that if politicians aren\u2019t reading bills then we don\u2019t really have a representative republic.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a problem that even New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sees as an issue and spoke out about it after House Rules Committee Chairman James McGovern (D-MA) refused to hand out paper copies of the 5,593-page bill to pass the $1.4 trillion COVID relief bill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>This is why Congress needs time to actually read this package before voting on it. Members of Congress have not read this bill. It\u2019s over 5000 pages, arrived at 2pm today, and we are told to expect a vote on it in 2 hours,\u201d she complained.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of the few times she and Ted Cruz agreed on anything\u2026before she <a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/brandon_morse\/2021\/02\/02\/republicans-demand-aoc-apologize-for-accusing-ted-cruz-of-attempted-murder-n320516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused him of attempting to murder her<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Boerbert took to social media to upload a public proposal, including restoring certain rules that would make it \u201cthe people\u2019s house\u201d instead of \u201cPelosi\u2019s house\u201d where she will no longer be able to function as a \u201csuper legislator.\u201d She also suggested reinstating the \u201cHolman Rule\u201d which would allow legislation to reduce the salary of or fire specific federal employees.<\/p>\n<p>Boerbert then proposed something that should be common sense. Introducing bills in the dead of night and then demanding they be voted on that day needs to come to an end, and she proposed a minimum of five days between the bill\u2019s introduction to the vote on it. She also noted that if the bill was an emergency and needed to be passed immediately, then it should require a two-thirds vote. She also suggested earmarks be banned once more.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s time to change the way things are done in The Swamp. In fact, bringing elected officials under control and not allowing them free reign with your taxpayer dollars and making them do the job we pay them to do should be one thing the majority of us agree on naturally.<\/p>\n<p>However, since it came out of Boebert\u2019s mouth, the left is rejecting it out of hand. Again, AOC wished for something very similar, but Boebert bad.<\/p>\n<p>Leftists began slamming Boebert, including members of the media. <a href=\"https:\/\/uproxx.com\/viral\/lauren-boebert-waiting-period-read-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uproxx<\/a> said she was \u201ctriggered,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politicususa.com\/2022\/07\/29\/lauren-boebert-reading.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politicususa<\/a> mocked her by saying \u201creading is hard.\u201d One Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pavancharvaka\/status\/1552768637789827072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1552768637789827072%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fuproxx.com%2Fviral%2Flauren-boebert-waiting-period-read-legislation%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">user suggested<\/a> Boebert stop fundraising and Twitter trolling so she has more time to read bills. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OutlawWitch\/status\/1552785116681740288?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1552785116681740288%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fuproxx.com%2Fviral%2Flauren-boebert-waiting-period-read-legislation%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Another suggested<\/a> that instead of passing these rules, they should pass laws that require people with a bachelor\u2019s degree at minimum to be qualified to run for office, mocking Boebert\u2019s GED.<\/p>\n<p>There are a ton more, but you get the idea.
