Ron DeSantis says.<\/p>\n<p>After the Bureau of Economic Analysis on Thursday reported a second quarter of negative GDP growth, signaling the U.S. is in a recession, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/biden-denies-recession-after-gdp-decline-but-economists-say-otherwise\/article_a3626260-0e9e-11ed-9688-ef0e874abc82.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied<\/a> the U.S. is in a recession and some mainstream media outlets began redefining what a recession is.<\/p>\n<p>The BEA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-07\/gdp2q22_adv.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that real Gross Domestic Product had decreased for two consecutive quarters, with the most recent data showing a decline of 0.9% from April to June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decrease in real GDP reflected decreases in private inventory investment, residential fixed investment, federal government spending, state and local government spending, and nonresidential fixed investment,\u201d the agency reported Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>In response, DeSantis issued a statement saying, \u201cU.S. GDP dropped for a second quarter in a row, which is the definition of a recession. While the Biden Administration and its legacy media cheerleaders are trying to gaslight people about the economic slowdown, we have seen Biden\u2019s poor economic stewardship and the negative impact it has had on families. Now, Biden wants to tax and spend even more, which will only make things worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two months earlier, DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/desantis-florida-prepared-if-u-s-heads-into-recession\/article_8b86fb40-cc8d-11ec-9d92-f343108928c8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> that Biden\u2019s policies would \u201cplunge the United States into a recession\u201d but Florida was prepared because its leaders were being \u201ca good steward of people\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re built for the long haul,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have no income tax, very low tax burden. There\u2019s nothing in the foreseeable future that would change that trajectory. It\u2019s important that we govern that way because I think it\u2019s very likely that Biden is going to plunge this country into a recession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to several indicators such as inflation, the Fed raising interest rates and market fluctuations, saying, \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of concern about the overall economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida\u2019s been doing well, and we\u2019re happy about that, but when you have the inflation headwinds, when you have the Fed raising interest rates, when you have some of the other things happening in the markets, there is a possibility of a downturn and unfortunately that downturn will have been precipitated by a lot of really bad policies coming out of Washington, D.C.,\u201d DeSantis said. He hoped he wasn\u2019t right, but two months later, the BEA data and rising consumer costs indicated a recession was underway.<\/p>\n<p>To combat inflation, the Florida Legislature took the opposite approach of Democrats in Washington, D.C., who are currently proposing tax increases. It passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/florida-legislature-passes-budget-with-1-billion-in-taxpayer-savings\/article_d76d6e5a-a3fb-11ec-8de8-c7f910ff9903.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">budget<\/a> with the largest tax cuts in state history of $1 billion, which DeSantis signed into law.<\/p>\n<p>The savings for Floridians was \u201cimmense,\u201d House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, said. It expanded \u201csales tax holidays, like Freedom Week, Hurricane Preparedness, and Back-to-School Holidays while also focusing tax relief on much-needed everyday items like diapers, tools, energy-efficient appliances, and pet supplies to make sure more money stays in people\u2019s pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Back-to-School tax holiday currently under way is expected to save Florida families more than $100 million.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, DeSantis announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/at-21-8-billion-florida-records-highest-surplus-in-state-history\/article_ca236666-fe35-11ec-8474-dbad07f7f666.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record surplus<\/a> of $21.8 billion for the 2022 fiscal year, the highest in state history and more than 21% of the state&#8217;s spending plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the headwinds created by the Biden administration\u2019s policies, Florida is in a strong fiscal position because we preserved freedom and kept our economy open,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cOur responsible policies have allowed us to make record investments to support our communities, promote education, protect the environment, and provide record tax relief for Floridians, all while building record reserves to protect the state against the reckless fiscal policies from Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state budget also expanded affordable housing programs by several hundred million dollars, the most in state history, and allocated bonuses and raises for teachers, first responders and those in law enforcement, including an expanded program to help \u201cHometown Heroes\u201d purchase homes in communities where they serve. The program drew the attention of many out-of-staters.<\/p>\n<p>A former police officer from Chicago and now Lee County Sherriff\u2019s deputy, Raymond Arce, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/florida-continues-to-recruit-law-enforcement-officers-from-out-of-state\/article_d2e0868a-0ddf-11ed-a7cc-93e1aaa740c6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> \u201cGov. DeSantis talking about how he appreciates his law enforcement and Attorney General Moody saying, \u2018if you need somewhere to go, come to us, we appreciate our police.\u2019 That was a big factor in my move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former New York State Guard member and New York resident, Paul Hanson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/new-york-transplant-joins-more-than-1-200-apply-for-400-spots-in-florida-state\/article_c4bea528-f1bf-11ec-83ea-37668a4c3047.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> he moved to Florida because of \u201cthe governor\u2019s leadership,\u201d which he said \u201cwas the deciding factor, not just on this issue but also on a lot of things we\u2019ve seen over the past few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Retro Fitness relocated to West Palm Beach from New York and New Jersey because \u201cFlorida is a business-friendly state,\u201d CEO Andrew Alfano said. While gym owners in blue states were facing jail time for staying open during lockdowns, \u201cFlorida was the very first state to reopen gyms and health clubs, recognizing the importance of getting people healthy,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause of the governor and state policies,\u201d Retro Fitness survived the pandemic and came out of it \u201cthriving and in growth mode.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden and mainstream media are \u201cgaslighting\u201d the American people about the recession, Florida Gov.
