The Telegraph was the first to report the news, also reporting that Watson will be paid more than $40 million in guaranteed money.<\/p>\n<p>The 43-year-old Watson is the sixth former Masters champion to join LIV Golf, giving it nine of the last 19 winners at Augusta National on its growing roster of players.<\/p>\n<p>Watson, who\u2019s won 12 PGA Tour events, including the 2012 and 2014 Masters, joins fellow Green Jacket winners Phil Mickelson (three), Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel and Dustin Johnson (each of whom has won once) as past Masters winners who\u2019ve joined LIV Golf.<\/p>\n<p>An official announcement hasn\u2019t yet been made by LIV and is imminent, but the plan is for Watson to play in the tour\u2019s next tournament, at the beginning of September in Boston, and become a captain of one of the teams in the 12-team LIV league in 2023.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Bubba-Watson.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption>Bubba Watson<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">USA TODAY Sports<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Watson, who\u2019s ranked 86th in the world, hasn\u2019t played since May after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge due to a torn meniscus and has missed the last two major championships.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Watson finished runner-up by a shot to Harold Varner III at the Saudi International in February, a tournament that\u2019s run by Golf Saudi and funded by the Public Investment Fund, which is the financial source behind LIV Golf.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, when asked about Saudi Arabia\u2019s poor human rights record, he praised the country for \u201ctrying to change.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey started with women\u2019s golf, started supporting the women\u2019s golf [through a series of events on the Ladies European Tour] and then they started supporting men\u2019s golf,\u2019\u2019 Watson said then. \u201cThere\u2019s women\u2019s tournaments already that they sponsor. [They\u2019re] trying to grow the game. They\u2019re trying to change industry over there, bring golf, bring tourism to Saudi Arabia with the beautiful beaches that they already have.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Watson, too, said, \u201cIt will be interesting to go over there and play, but also see the beauty of other parts of the world that God\u2019s created,\u2019\u2019 adding, \u201cI can\u2019t wait to get over there.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Well, now the Saudis have him and, as soon as he tees it up in Boston, Watson will be suspended by the PGA Tour just as the other players who\u2019ve signed with LIV Golf were as soon as they played with the tour.<\/p>\n<p>LIV Golf\u2019s third event <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/27\/donald-trump-to-play-with-dustin-johnson-bryson-dechambeau-at-liv-golf\/\">is taking place this week at Trump Bedminster<\/a>, where Charles Howell III, Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson and Jason Kokrak will be making their respective LIV Golf debuts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yet another past Masters champion has landed with LIV Golf.
