Another is a small patch, similar to a nicotine patch used by smokers trying to quit, that would inject the vaccine via microneedles.<\/p>\n<p>NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/nasal-vaccines-latest-research-nasal-vaccines-covid-rcna38820\">reported<\/a> this week that nasal vaccines \u201chave the potential to prevent infections entirely\u201d because they raise immunity exactly where the virus enters the body.<\/p>\n<p>The nasal vaccines \u201cconcentrate the immune protection in the upper airway,\u201d Fauci told NBC News. That means the \u201cantibodies that are trying to protect you from having the virus enter your body, are right there on the front lines protecting you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA traditional shot in the arm, you get what\u2019s called systemic immunity, namely antibodies build up that are essentially distributed in different organs of the body,\u201d Fauci said. That, he noted, is why people who contract the virus now after being vaccinated \u2014 including Fauci himself \u2014 have far less severe symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>The nasal vaccine would work as a booster after original shots of the full vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>But the nasal vaccine won\u2019t be available for at least two years, according to Fauci. Scientists are now testing a modified version of a virus that usually infects birds to attack the virus, and it has already been found to generate immune responses in mice.<\/p>\n<p>Top U.S. health officials are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/with-omicron-variant-ba-5-spreading-white-house-urges-americans-to-get-covid-boosters\">recommending<\/a> another booster shot for most Americans, and a panel that advises the FDA is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fda-panel-recommends-new-covid-19-shots-to-target-omicron-variant\">working<\/a> on a new one that could be released this fall that would target the Omicron variant and its subvariants, including BA.5.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent for a national newspaper.
