A recent analysis found that Hershey\u2019s raised the prices of its various bars by a weighted average of 14%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManagement says that the incremental pricing is in response to incremental cost pressure as some hedge expirations approach,\u201d Goldman Sachs analyst Jason English <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/inflation-chocolate-bars-hershey-154341220.html#:~:text=In%20a%20recent%20note%20to,and%20hikes%20on%20various%20pouch\">explained<\/a>. \u201cWhile higher pricing on higher costs is not unique to the company, we believe Hershey is enacting the increases to preserve its growth algorithm which contrasts meaningfully with center-of-plate food companies who are raising prices to minimize earnings declines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Confectioners Association also recently told FoodDive that the entire industry is facing pressures due to the state of the American economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no question that the challenges faced across the industry \u2014 supply chain, inflation, labor shortages, broad pandemic impact and more \u2014 have disproportionately affected small and mid-sized companies compared with their larger counterparts,\u201d Carly Schildhaus, a spokesperson for the trade group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/small-candy-makers-rethink-business-strategy-inflation-supply-chain-cost\/625658\/\">told<\/a> FoodDive.<\/p>\n<p>Frankford Candy CEO Stuart Selarnick\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/small-candy-makers-rethink-business-strategy-inflation-supply-chain-cost\/625658\/\">added<\/a>\u00a0that his Philadelphia candy company has had to get creative in order to find needed ingredients. Selarnick told the outlet that it\u2019s the first time in company history that there has ever been trouble finding ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to move on,\u201d Selnick said. \u201cYou have to be resourceful and find other sources, other opportunities, other suppliers,\u201d Selarnick said. \u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re really good at because we\u2019re nimble. We can move quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the problem \u2014 albeit a bittersweet one for the candy makers given the shortage of needed supply \u2014 is that demand for the sugary confections is strong even as inflation raises costs across the board.<\/p>\n<p>National Confectioners Association CEO John Downs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mashed.com\/932473\/why-some-artisanal-candies-are-more-expensive-post-covid\/\">told<\/a> the media that \u201cin contrast to rising costs for families related to inflation, health care and simply putting food on the table, candy remains a simple, affordable treat.
