Bromwich and Jay Root, noted that shortly after the attack \u2014 which was quickly thwarted by <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/the-lee-zeldin-attack-and-the-perils-of-bail-reform-in-americas-democrat-run-cities\/\">Zeldin<\/a> and others nearby \u2014 the candidate predicted that his assailant would likely be back out on the street, thanks to New York\u2019s bail laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1f2g8uf e1h9rw200\" data-testid=\"headline\">\u201cHow Did a Man Accused of Attacking Lee Zeldin Go Free Without Bail?\u201d the headline read, followed by a sub-headline that laid out the conspiracy theory: \u201cThe decision to release the suspect was seen by some Democrats as a ploy to fuel Mr. Zeldin\u2019s anti-crime campaign as he runs for governor of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"headline\">Shortly after the attack, Zeldin shared his prediction on Twitter. \u201cHis words as he tried to stab me a few hours ago were \u2018you\u2019re done,\u2019 but several attendees, including @espositoforNY, quickly jumped into action &#038; tackled the guy,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cLaw enforcement was on the scene within minutes. It also pointed out the fact that the sheriff who filed the charge \u2014 Todd K. Baxter of Monroe County \u2014 was an opponent of the bail law and that the attacker could have been charged with a more serious, bail-eligible offense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no idea why a prosecutor would not charge the more serious offense,\u201d said Charles D. Lavine (D), chair of the Assembly\u2019s judiciary committee and a former defense attorney. \u201cHere\u2019s a situation where someone attacks an elected official with a weapon. Could it have been \u2014 as some people are suggesting \u2014 that the charge was drafted in such a way as to allow Zeldin to complain about the bail laws in the state of New York? That I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State Assemblyman Demond Meeks (D-Rochester) went a bit further, calling the whole sequence of events \u201cdefinitely a political ploy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And while Zeldin\u2019s campaign team has certainly capitalized on the way the incident showed the need for just the kind of reform his platform proposes, there did not appear to be any solid evidence to back up the claims being made.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We cannot live in a state where someone who commits a felony trying to stab me on stage at a campaign rally then gets immediately released.\u00a0New York\u2019s cashless bail law must be REPEALED!\u00a0\u00a0Kathy Hochul refuses to get this job done.
