There are no credible reports suggesting TheJournal.ie published such an article.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization recently declared monkeypox, a virus quickly spreading across the world, a \u201cglobal health emergency,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/23\/who-declares-spreading-monkeypox-outbreak-a-global-health-emergency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a> reported. The virus is spread through direct contact with bodily fluid, scabs or rashes, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An image shared on Facebook claims monkeypox can live on surfaces for up to 120 years. The image shows what appears to be a news article from the Irish news outlet TheJournal.ie with a headline that reads, \u201cMonkeypox can live on door handles and toilet seats for 120 years and can infect anyone from 5 miles away.\u201d The article appears to have been viewed approximately 37,000 times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Without wishing to sound alarmist it\u2019s certainly time to panic now,\u2019 said a UCD expert with a degree in Journalism but who once read a really good book on virology,\u201d reads the article\u2019s sub-headline. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/05\/30\/fact-check-fda-prifzer-monkeypox-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: FACT CHECK: Did The FDA Approve A Pfizer Monkeypox Vaccine?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article is digitally fabricated. An editor at TheJournal.ie confirmed the outlet never published such a headline.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/tineye.com\/search\/2abc7c7c3ea3609be5a4bee95afe1681ea9fb432?domain=thejournal.ie&#038;sort=score&#038;order=desc&#038;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reverse image search<\/a> shows multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/monkeypox-name-change-who-5827113-Jul2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">articles<\/a> published by TheJournal.ie featuring the same image included in the Facebook post, but none of these genuine articles mention monkeypox living on surfaces for 120 years.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC states on its website that the virus can contaminate the environment for an extended period of time. \u201cDuring the infectious period of time, body fluids, respiratory secretions, and lesion material from people with monkeypox can contaminate the environment,\u201d reads the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/specific-settings\/home-disinfection.html#:~:text=During%20the%20infectious%20period%20of,cool%2C%20and%20low%20humidity%20environments.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDC website<\/a>. \u201cPoxviruses can survive in linens, clothing and on environmental surfaces, particularly when in dark, cool, and low humidity environments.
