But it\u2019s his investment in a different field that\u2019s now turning heads: Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2021\/apr\/05\/bill-gates-climate-crisis-farmland\">revealed<\/a> that Bill Gates had become the single largest farmland owner in America. While quietly amassing more American farmland than any other person on Earth, Gates has also positioned himself as one of the leading voices for \u201csynthetic meat\u201d and other meat alternatives \u2014 claiming they\u2019re imperative in the fight against climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the story of what Bill Gates is doing with all that farmland, and how he\u2019s waging a war on meat to line his own pockets \u2014 all under the guise of climate activism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All The Land Money Can Buy<\/p>\n<p>As of last year, Bill Gates owned roughly a quarter million acres of U.S. farmland \u2014 nearly the size of Hong Kong. There are 70,000 acres in Louisiana for corn, cotton, and rice and 20,000 acres in Nebraska for soybeans. One of his potato farms is so big you can literally see it from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicworld.com\/business-news\/international-business\/bill-gates-farmland-growing-potatoes-for-mcdonalds-fries-is-visible-from-space-report.html\">space<\/a>. Gates\u2019 farmland stretches across 19 states \u2014 from North Carolina to Michigan to California \u2014 and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2021\/04\/07\/bill-gates-now-americas-biggest-farmer-does-want-land\/\">valued<\/a> at nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For years, Gates and his ex-wife Melinda used a series of shell companies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/bill-gates-uses-farmland-investment-211220333.html\">hide<\/a> their land purchases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, for example, a company called Angelina Agriculture purchased approximately $171 million worth of farmland in Washington state. On the surface, Angelina was a small company based in a Louisiana town with 462 people. It had two employees. But according to <a href=\"https:\/\/landreport.com\/2021\/01\/farmer-bill\/\">records<\/a>, the business was actually under the umbrella of a group called Cascade Investment \u2014 a private investment firm controlled by Bill Gates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gates is no stranger to agriculture; in the past, his foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/our-work\/programs\/global-growth-and-opportunity\/agricultural-development\">invested<\/a> tens of millions of dollars into GMO technology. Those transactions included a $27.6 million investment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/gates-foundation-ties-with-monsanto-under-fire-from-activists\/\">Monsanto<\/a> \u2014 the agricultural company that would later be forced to pay out over $11 billion in settlements after it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawsuit-information-center.com\/roundup-mdl-judge-question-10-billion-settlement-proposal.html\">found<\/a> that some of its products caused cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Gates\u2019 transition from simply investing in farming technology to becoming the leading owner of farmland itself is even more noteworthy when coupled with his shifting stance on meat.<\/p>\n<p>The New War On Meat<\/p>\n<p>As Gates was amassing swaths of farmland, the billionaire also emerged as one of the world\u2019s most prominent and vociferous voices for synthetic meat and other plant-based alternatives. According to him, the transition away from meat must take place swiftly in order to save the planet from climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef,\u201d Gates said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2021\/02\/14\/1018296\/bill-gates-climate-change-beef-trees-microsoft\/\">conversation<\/a> with MIT\u2019s Technology Review.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s so important, he says, that government coercion could be necessary to catalyze the shift. \u201cYou can sort of change the [behavior of] people or use regulation to totally shift the demand,\u201d he added bluntly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a separate interview with CBS, Gates <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/backtolife_2022\/status\/1362441129615110152?s=20&#038;t=VXFm2o5qYEEtbeymh9s30w\">elaborated<\/a>: \u201cUnless we can make the cow zero emission, which I\u2019m not sure we can, we do need to get rid of those emissions. It\u2019s not gonna happen overnight. The scale-up and the innovation still required there is quite large.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If it were up to Bill Gates, the world would abandon meat for synthetic and plant-based alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you make synthetic meat? And what goes into plant-based alternatives?<\/p>\n<p>Well, it just so happens that \u201cplant-based\u201d meat is typically created with a variety of lentils, potatoes, pea proteins, soy and wheat \u2014 all things grown on farmland owned by Gates. Over the last five years, Gates has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/BL-VCDB-17877\">invested<\/a> tens of millions of dollars into leading plant-based meat companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He is also among the single largest investors in \u201csynthetic\u201d or lab-grown meat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/03\/23\/bill-gates-and-richard-branson-bet-on-lab-grown-meat-startup.html\">pouring<\/a> tens of millions more into companies like Memphis Meats.<\/p>\n<p>Shifting The Narrative<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, the biggest problem standing in the way of a meatless world is the question of how exactly you get people to leave meat behind. And thanks to Gates, we now have an answer to that question: You convince the world that eliminating meat is necessary for fighting climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Gates initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/03\/23\/bill-gates-and-richard-branson-bet-on-lab-grown-meat-startup.html\">argued<\/a> that the shift away from traditional meat was imperative due to population growth, his new message centers on environmental activism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the last five years, climate activists \u2014 with Gates at the forefront \u2014 increasingly began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=N6z8BqsHQl0\">claiming<\/a> the meat industry posed an existential threat to the planet, and that our reliance on cows for food was accelerating climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Waging a war on meat was necessary to save the environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, for example, Gates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/bill-gates-warns-of-the-dangers-of-cow-farts-and-the-world-should-take-his-words-seriously\/articleshow\/67962704.cms\">wrote<\/a> in his annual letter to friends and followers that the world must cut back on meat because cows \u201cgive off methane when they belch and pass gas.
