Roughly 70% of those cases were reported from Europe, while the Americas make up about 25%.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The virus has primarily spread among \u201cmen who have sex with men\u201d and is spread through close physical contact, including sexual intercourse. The virus could also be spread by touching objects that someone with the virus had used.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrTedros\/status\/1552382934300200960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ghebreyesus<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> warned that men who engage in homosexual sex should reduce the number of partners they sexually engage with and further cautioned nations to be on guard against disinformation about the virus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe stigma and discrimination can be as dangerous as any virus and can fuel the outbreak,\u201d Ghebreyesus\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/disclosetv\/status\/1552288345438437379?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1552288345438437379%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Felamerican.com%2Fthe-who-chief-that-spread-dangerous-covid-misinformation-calls-to-regulate-monkeypox-disinformation-on-social-media%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. \u201cAs we have seen with COVID-19, misinformation and disinformation can spread rapidly online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSo we call on all social media platforms, tech companies, and news organizations to work with us to prevent and counter harmful information,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New York City\u2019s Department of Health recently wrote a\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYCHealthCommr\/status\/1552030247691894785?s=20&#038;t=mC4oyiTyLHSa_Rmu6KvhMg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">letter<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to Ghebreyesus saying the city has once again found itself at the epicenter of a contagious disease after it surpassed 1,000 confirmed cases.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The department also expressed worry about the effect the name monkeypox can have on vulnerable communities \u201cgiven the stigma it may engender, and the painful racist history within which terminology like this is rooted for communities of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The letter asked the WHO to use alternative terms for the virus, such as \u201chMPRXV\u201d and \u201cMPV,\u201d as the virus does not \u201coriginate in monkeys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">website<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0claims monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research. Yet, the CDC says the disease\u2019s source remains unknown despite its name.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Biden administration could declare monkeypox a national public health emergency in the coming days, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/07\/27\/biden-admin-monkeypox-health-emergency-00048333\">according to<\/a> Politico.
