Gavin Newsom and the Port of Oakland vowed to crack down on protesters disrupting port operations, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/terminals-californias-third-busiest-port-resume-regular-hours-monday-2022-07-25\/\">reported<\/a>. The Port of Oakland sent a letter to truckers on July 21 which said that they should restrict their demonstrations to designated \u201cfree speech zones,\u201d noting that those who don\u2019t comply would be \u201ccited and penalized\u201d by police, The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/port-of-oakland-reopens-as-trucker-blockade-ends-11658780128\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Truckers had been protesting legislation, Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5) that would reclassify them as employees rather than independent contractors, according to previous Daily Caller News Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/22\/truckers-newsom-relent-labor-law-protests-strikes-ports\/\">reporting<\/a>. The law was meant to protect gig workers at companies like Uber and Lyft from exploitation, but many truckers feel that it would ruin their business model. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/25\/workers-uniting-throttle-supply-chains\/\">(RELATED: Workers Of The World Are Uniting To Throttle Supply Chains)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Newsom\u2019s office told the Daily Caller News Foundation that although \u201cit has been the subject of litigation, AB 5 was enacted in 2019, so no one should be caught by surprise by the law\u2019s requirements at this time. The industry should focus on supporting this transition just as California has and continues to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s office has not reached out to the truckers since they began protesting, Rashpal Singh, an Oakland-based trucker, told the DCNF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI don\u2019t think the government is going to listen \u2026 we haven\u2019t heard anything from them,\u201d Singh said.<\/p>\n<p>Truckers remain opposed to AB 5 but want to avoid a criminal record and continued financial strain, Supply Chain Drive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supplychaindive.com\/news\/Port-of-Oakland-terminal-operations-open-some-truckers-back-to-work\/628144\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we continue only we will hurt ourselves and port of Oakland business,\u201d Japi Samra, an owner-operator of 10 years, told Supply Chain Drive.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Cargo containers are moving again at the Port of Oakland after independent truck drivers stood down from protesting.
