Linguist Nanette Caspillo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/qjpwnm\/filipino-vs-filipinx-debate-language-philippines-culture-identity\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><i><span>Vice <\/span><\/i><span>that the term is &#8220;unnatural&#8221; because &#8220;the suffix \u2018-x\u2019 does not exist in the Philippine linguistic system.&#8221; While advocates for the term contend that it is more inclusive of people who reject the traditional gender binary, Filipino social media users <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MUSExSB19\/status\/1551784605048459264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>pointed out<\/span><\/a><span> that the word &#8220;Filipino&#8221; is already gender-neutral.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Filipinx Voices in Pop Culture was a fun and educational all Filipinx panel discussing Filipinx influences behind your favorite media! \ud83d\udcf8 Edward S. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OOgLFKp2pf\">pic.twitter.com\/OOgLFKp2pf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 San Diego Comic-Con (@Comic_Con) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Comic_Con\/status\/1550269418953125888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 22, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The response to Comic-Con\u2019s foray into ethnic gender-neutrality was overwhelmingly negative on Facebook and Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I\u2019d rather be called a racial slur than Filipinx&#8221; one user <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tobystoenail\/status\/1551479186790838274?s=20&#038;t=XrgX0dRixgjOWbmK1xJr9Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Please stop trying to impose weird western gender ideology onto people who never wanted it or asked for it in the first place&#8221; another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kangminjlee\/status\/1551902013973471234?s=20&#038;t=wVaA1crnBIO606w8PShmVA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Left-wing activists have made efforts in recent years to normalize &#8220;Latinx&#8221; as a gender-neutral term for Hispanics. Almost no Latinos <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/hispanic\/2020\/08\/11\/about-one-in-four-u-s-hispanics-have-heard-of-latinx-but-just-3-use-it\/\"><span>use<\/span><\/a><span> the term, and 40 percent of Hispanics find it outright <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=0000017d-81be-dee4-a5ff-efbe74ec0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>offensive<\/span><\/a><span>.
