In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/grassley_to_justice_deptfbipoliticalbiasfollowup.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scathing letter<\/a> addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray on Monday, Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley detailed how partisanship has long tainted how the FBI and DOJ conduct their investigations. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttorney General Garland and Director Wray, simply put, based on the allegations that I\u2019ve received from numerous whistleblowers, you have systemic and existential problems within your agencies,\u201d Grassley said. \u201cYou have an obligation to the country to take these allegations seriously, immediately investigate and take steps to institute fixes to these and other matters before you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relying on reports from \u201chighly credible\u201d whistleblowers in both government agencies, Grassley specifically explained how the FBI sought to \u201cimproperly discredit negative Hunter Biden information as disinformation and caused investigative activity to cease.\u201d Because of the actions of several high-ranking federal officials, Grassley said, \u201cverified and verifiable derogatory information on Hunter Biden was falsely labeled as disinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aforementioned allegations put a finer point on concerns that I have raised for many years about political considerations infecting the decision-making process at the Justice Department and FBI,\u201d Grassley wrote. \u201cIf these allegations are true and accurate, the Justice Department and FBI are \u2014 and have been \u2014 institutionally corrupted to their very core to the point in which the United States Congress and the American people will have no confidence in the equal application of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grassley wrote both Garland and Wray in May to warn them of \u201clikely violations of Federal laws, regulations, and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) guidelines\u201d by Assistant Special Agent in Charge Timothy Thibault, who hails from the Washington Field Office. According to that letter on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/news\/news-releases\/grassley-raises-concern-about-apparent-political-bias-by-senior-fbi-public-integrity-official\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">May 31<\/a>, the high-ranking, veteran FBI agent \u201cdemonstrated a pattern of active public partisanship\u201d on his social media that \u201cis likely a violation of his ethical obligations as an FBI employee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A letter from Grassley on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/grassley_to_justice_dept_fbi_-_political_bias.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">July 18<\/a> detailed how Thibault\u2019s political partisanship actually \u201cwent much deeper than the inappropriate social media posts\u201d and \u201cimpacted his official decision-making on sensitive public corruption investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Grassley called on whistleblowers to come forward about corruption, they disclosed to the senator that \u201cThibault declined to open or approve investigations based on partisan objectives notwithstanding the existence of proper predication,\u201d including, as Grassley noted in his most recent letter, \u201can avenue of additional derogatory Hunter Biden reporting.\u201d Thibault also allegedly tried to \u201cimproperly mark the matter in FBI systems so that it could not be opened in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Grassley noted, it is Congress\u2019s \u201cconstitutional responsibility\u201d to \u201cinvestigate the Executive Branch for fraud, waste, abuse and gross mismanagement \u2014 acts which undermine faith in the American people\u2019s governmental institutions.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the senator gave Garland and Wray until Aug. 8 to supply his office with records \u201crelated to derogatory information on Hunter Biden, James Biden, and their foreign business relationships,\u201d as well as information about the agents who allegedly improperly closed investigations into the Biden family business.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley did not touch on the DOJ or FBI\u2019s previous known abuses, but it\u2019s clear from the tone of his letter that he believes this is a problem deeply rooted in both agencies, having affected multiple presidential elections and hampered Americans\u2019 confidence in the government. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis double standard in the application of Justice Department and FBI policies has resulted in investigations opened in a manner appearing to benefit the political aims and objectives of a select few Justice Department and FBI officials,\u201d Grassley wrote last week. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
