Version: 4.0.47--><p>Approximately 2,500 members of a union that represents three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-boeing\">Boeing<\/a> Co. defense locations in Missouri are set to go on strike next month after they voted to reject the\u00a0plane maker\u2019s contract offer.<\/p>\n<p>The International Association of Machinists (IAM) and Aerospace Workers District 837 confirmed the planned strike, which comes after weeks of bargaining, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iam837.org\/news\/2500-st-louis-machinists-union-members-to-strike-boeing-aug-1\/\">statement<\/a> on July 24.<\/p>\n<p>The strike is planned to begin on Aug. 1 at Boeing manufacturing facilities\u00a0in\u00a0St. Charles County, St. Louis County, and Mascoutah, Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>Workers at those plants build\u00a0military aircraft, including the F-15, F-18, T-7A trainer, and the MQ-25 unmanned refueler.<\/p>\n<p>Boring employs\u00a014,865 workers in Missouri, according to the company\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boeing.com\/company\/general-info\/#\/employment-data\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur members have spoken loudly and with one voice,\u201d the union\u2019s statement read. \u201cWe cannot accept a contract that is not fair and\u00a0equitable, as this company continues to make billions of dollars each year off the backs of our hardworking members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement added that Boeing \u201cpreviously took away a pension from our members, and now the company is unwilling to adequately compensate our members\u2019 401(k) plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not allow this company to put our members\u2019 hard-earned retirements in jeopardy,\u201d IAM added.<\/p>\n<p>The more than 2,000\u00a0members of\u00a0IAM District 837\u00a0opened contract negotiations with Boeing Defense on July 6, 2022, regarding wages, health care, retirement, and more.<\/p>\n<p>The current contract is set to expire on Monday, July 25.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Disappointed\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>A Boeing spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-24\/boeing-defense-workers-reject-contract-plan-to-strike-aug-1#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a> that the Virginia-based\u00a0company was \u201cdisappointed with Sunday\u2019s vote\u00a0to reject a strong, highly competitive offer,\u201d and that the company is \u201cactivating our contingency plan to support continuity of operations in the event of a strike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/business\/local\/boeing-union-workers-agree-to-strike-at-three-st-louis-area-facilities\/article_277c36c8-b5f5-5477-8442-33feb8c15430.html#tracking-source=home-top-story\">statement<\/a> to the\u00a0Post-Dispatch prior to the vote, a Boeing spokesperson said its contract proposal had offered \u201chighly competitive wage increases and one of the most lucrative 401(k) plans in the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of its retirement plan, Boeing would \u201cmatch\u00a0dollar-for-dollar up to 10 percent of base and incentive pay, while the company also promised to make a\u00a0special contribution of 2 percent in 2023 and 2024,\u201d according to the\u00a0Post-Dispatch.<\/p>\n<p>The union previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iam837.org\/news\/contract-vote-reminder\/\">said<\/a> Boeing \u201chas offered subpar GWI\u2019s (general wage increases), no change in wage progression, and takeaways in the 401k.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times has contacted Boeing for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing came under fire last year after telling workers they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mkt_app\/hundreds-of-boeing-workers-protest-in-washington-state-after-company-tells-workers-they-must-be-vaccinated_4054195.html\">must be vaccinated against COVID-19<\/a>, prompting protests in Washington State.<\/p>\n<p>The company also has had a turbulent few years which saw a number of crashes, including a Boeing 737 operated by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/boeing-issues-safety-warning-on-737-max-after-lion-air-crash_2710195.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indonesian airline Lion Air,\u00a0<\/a>which crashed 13 minutes after departure in 2018.\u00a0All 189 people aboard the plane were killed.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0157 people died in 2019 when a\u00a0737 operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/crash-victims-families-told-approval-of-737-max-by-transport-canada-looks-imminent_3603587.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shortly after takeoff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after that crash, all 737 MAX airplanes were temporarily grounded in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2022, a Boeing 737-800 airplane, operated by China Eastern Airlines, crashed in southern China with 132 people on board.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Boeing reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/boeing-posts-1-2-billion-loss-in-q1-worse-than-expected_4431550.html\">$1.2 billion loss<\/a> in the first quarter.
