Walmart shares fell nearly 10% after trading closed on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe increasing levels of food and fuel inflation are affecting how customers spend, and while we\u2019ve made good progress clearing hardline categories, apparel in Walmart U.S. is requiring more markdown dollars,\u201d Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/press-release\/business-wire\/inflation-covid-health-prices-0538087145584cf1a6d0767ce7e5db7c\">press release<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re now anticipating more pressure on general merchandise in the back half; however, we\u2019re encouraged by the start we\u2019re seeing on school supplies in Walmart U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite more careful spending from many consumers, Walmart reported that its market share continues to grow \u2014 particularly with respect to groceries \u2014 as Americans leave rival stores to seek bargains.<\/p>\n<p>The Consumer Price Index (CPI) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/retail-sales-surge-faster-than-expected-as-inflation-rattles-economy\">rose<\/a> 9.1% between June 2021 and June 2022, while the Producer Price Index (PPI) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/producer-price-index-hits-11-3-in-another-dismal-inflation-reading\">rose<\/a> 11.3% over the same period, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. S&#038;P Global recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/business-leaders-report-first-output-contraction-since-2020-as-consumers-get-pinched-by-inflation\">found<\/a> that businesses are facing \u201cupticks in input costs at suppliers, as fuel, transportation, raw material and wage expenses rose further,\u201d causing many to raise the prices they charge consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Although a report from the Department of Commerce shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/retail-sales-surge-faster-than-expected-as-inflation-rattles-economy\">national retail sales<\/a> grew by 1% last month, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.3% over the same period \u2014 implying that higher price levels played a significant role in the higher spending rather than true gains in economic activity. Even as wages nominally increase, real average hourly earnings have fallen 3.6% from June 2021 to June 2022 since rising price levels significantly outpace rising pay, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/realer.nr0.htm\">data<\/a> from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart\u2019s dismal announcement occurs as economists brace for the Bureau of Economic Analysis\u2019 advance estimate of second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth later this week \u2014 a reading that is expected to show that the economy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantafed.org\/cqer\/research\/gdpnow\">shrank<\/a> at a 1.6% annualized pace from April to June.
