The Department of Justice said in June it is bracing for more cyberwarfare from adversarial countries. Last month, the FBI revealed it intercepted an Iranian-backed cyberattack against Boston Children\u2019s Hospital, and Russian hackers targeted an American satellite company in Ukraine earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart, who served as policy adviser for the Obama administration\u2019s Department of Homeland Security, has criticized the United States as an intrinsically racist society in her writing and on social media.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CamilleEsq\/status\/1313848678633762816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that the U.S. economy &#8220;lost $16 trillion b\/c of Racism against Black Americans,&#8221; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CamilleEsq\/status\/1325254535619649541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a>\u00a0in 2020 that &#8220;SYSTEMIC RACISM WILL RUIN THIS DEMOCRACY,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CamilleEsq\/status\/1387586945505693697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arguing<\/a>\u00a0that systemic racism was a part of &#8220;every institution not just the criminal justice system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Solutions] to cybersecurity challenges will never reach their full potential until systemic racism\u00a0is addressed and diverse voices are reflected among our ranks at all levels,&#8221; Stewart\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/blog\/systemic-racism-cybersecurity-threat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a 2020 column for the Council on Foreign Relations titled &#8220;Systemic Racism Is a National Security Threat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She added that &#8220;communities of color are disproportionately affected by cyberattacks that target critical infrastructure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/national-security\/526835-what-the-biden-administration-needs-to-do-to-strengthen-our\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">column<\/a>\u00a0for the <em>Hill<\/em>, Stewart said the Biden administration\u2019s efforts to combat systemic racism &#8220;must be woven into leadership priorities, processes, structures, and domestic and international strategy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stewart proposed that U.S. foreign policy leaders be encouraged to &#8220;talk about systemic racism in the U.S on a global stage&#8221; and acknowledge the &#8220;detrimental effects of racism at home and in U.S. foreign policy towards regions of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not respond to a request for comment. A White House press release on Monday said Stewart was &#8220;regarded as not only an expert but also as an inspiration, especially to women and underrepresented minorities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/house-oversight-gop-probe-blinken-state-departments-global-woke-czar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">objected<\/a> to other recent hires by the Biden administration, including U.S. special representative for racial equity and justice appointee Desir\u00e9e Cormier Smith, who <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/biden-state-appointee-says-white-diplomats-are-too-protective-of-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0white diplomats lack empathy and humility.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden\u2019s incoming cyber defense deputy has claimed that &#8220;systemic racism&#8221; is one of the greatest threats to U.S. cybersecurity.
