Both films ultimately made over $255 million worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Critics were largely positive about \u201c <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/film-reviews-entertainment-movies-hollywood-daniel-kaluuya-aba9016bf9b7e94614087152de3225f4\">Nope<\/a>,\u201d which stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun and pays homage to UFO films like \u201cClose Encounters of the Third Kind\u201d and \u201cSigns,\u201d and is currently resting at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great number,\u201d said Jim Orr, Universal\u2019s president of domestic distribution. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how broadly it\u2019s playing too.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cJordan Peele crafted an incredible film,\u201d Orr added. \u201cAnd it is absolutely something that should be seen on the big screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film got off to a strong start with $6.4 million from Thursday previews. By the end of Friday, it had grossed $19.3 million. About 68% of the opening weekend audience was between the ages of 18 and 34, which is the \u201csweet spot\u201d for a horror film. Audiences were also quite diverse according to exit polls, reporting 35% Caucasian, 33% Black, 20% Hispanic and 8% Asian.<\/p>\n<p>And many chose to experience \u201cNope\u201d in IMAX, which accounted for about $5.2 million of its first weekend earnings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly gratifying to see a visionary like Jordan Peele, who represents a new generation of filmmakers, use our technology in pioneering ways and create an experience meant to be seen in IMAX,\u201d said IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond.<\/p>\n<p>Word of mouth is going to be critical in the coming weeks for \u201cNope,\u201d which begins its international rollout on Aug. 12.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAn opening weekend for a Jordan Peele film is not the right metric. We have to see where it is a month from now,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. \u201c\u2019Nope\u2019 could have solid, long-term playability as the word gets out. One need only look at \u2018Elvis\u2019 to see that a film doesn\u2019t have to open huge to be a big success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNope\u201d knocked \u201cThor: Love and Thunder\u201d to second place in its third weekend. The Disney and Marvel blockbuster starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman added $22.1 million, bringing its global total to $598.2 million.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Universal\u2019s \u201cMinions: The Rise of Gru\u201d landed in third place with $17.7 million in its fourth weekend. The animated pic has made $640.3 million globally.<\/p>\n<p>The Sony-released adaptation of the bestseller \u201cWhere the Crawdads Sing,\u201d meanwhile, is enjoying a modest second weekend drop. The film starring Daisy Edgar-Jones added an estimated $10.3 million from 3,650 locations. It\u2019s now grossed $38.3 million domestically.<\/p>\n<p>Paramount\u2019s \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d rounded out the top five in its ninth weekend with an additional $10 million. Earlier this week it surpassed \u201cThe Avengers\u201d to become ninth biggest domestic release of all time with its total now sitting at $635.6 million.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>In limited release, \u201cMarcel the Shell with Shoes On\u201d continued its expansion and made $846,950 from 590 theaters.<\/p>\n<p>Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
