Paying for abortions is much cheaper than paying for pregnancy, childbirth, and maternity leave. Abortion is good for the bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>And woke virtue-signaling on abortion is used to deflect attention away from the brutal practices of Big Business, such as the use of slave labor and cooperation with repression in despotic countries in which they operate.<\/p>\n<p>Now the wealthiest law firms in the country, or \u201cBig Law,\u201d are hopping on the abortion bandwagon. In an\u00a0effort to prop up billable hours in their legal mills, much of Big Law has made the same <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/business-and-practice\/big-law-firms-tout-abortion-access-help-for-attorneys-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pledge<\/a> as Big Business: We will pay all your abortion expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Law profit model depends upon grueling hours put in by young lawyers to fund the high profits enjoyed by equity partners. Childbirth and maternity leave\u00a0can significantly dent firms\u2019 ability to maintain this profit model. Thus, in the case of both Big Business and Big Law, the message is clear: Get rid of the kid and get back to work.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these Big Law firms have no problem representing corporate polluters, weapons manufacturers, tobacco companies, and despotic foreign governments.\u00a0Like Big Business, their woke virtue-signaling on abortion helps deflect attention from their often brutal business practices.<\/p>\n<p>The firms touting sponsorship of abortion coverage include such powerhouses\u00a0as Sidley Austin and Vinson &#038; Elkins,\u00a0each\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0large\u00a0Texas\u00a0presence. Texas has enacted a ban on abortion after\u00a0six weeks when a fetal heartbeat can be detected.<\/p>\n<p>Vinson &#038; Elkins, for example,\u00a0with three offices in Texas,\u00a0last year\u00a0reported more than $912 million in\u00a0gross revenue and average profits per equity partner\u00a0of $3.5 million. The firm recently <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/business-and-practice\/big-law-firms-tout-abortion-access-help-for-attorneys-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> it \u201cwill, as part of its health plan, provide a travel benefit for covered health care services that are unavailable locally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sidley Austin,\u00a0with offices in Houston and Dallas,\u00a0reported\u00a0almost $2.8 billion in net revenue in 2021, with average profits per partner of\u00a0more than $3.7 million.\u00a0The\u00a0firm has also stated it will cover abortion-related travel expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Sidley Austin\u2019s statement, in particular, prompted a\u00a0fierce reaction from the Texas Freedom Caucus, a group of conservative Texas legislators.\u00a0In a July 7 <a href=\"https:\/\/bnanews102.bna.com\/social-justice\/sidley-targeted-as-republicans-warn-firms-on-abortion-pledges?context=article-related\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to the firm\u2019s Dallas-based managing partner,\u00a0the Freedom Caucus\u00a0wrote, \u201cIt has come to our attention that Sidley Austin has decided to reimburse the travel costs of employees who leave Texas to murder their unborn children\u201d and that\u00a0\u201c[i]t\u00a0also\u00a0appears that Sidley has been complicit in illegal abortions that were performed in Texas before and after the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling in Dobbs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0letter goes on to state that to the extent Sidley is\u00a0facilitating abortions, \u201cit is exposing itself and each of its partners to felony criminal prosecution and disbarment.\u201d The letter adds that the Freedom Caucus would be \u201cintroducing legislation next session that will impose additional civil and criminal sanctions on law firms that pay for abortions or abortion travel.\u201d Sidley has not yet responded publicly.<\/p>\n<p>But others denizens of Big Law have weighed in, and they are\u00a0incensed at the proposed Texas legislative action. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:share:6953739432768270336?utm_source=linkedin_share&#038;utm_medium=member_desktop_share&#038;utm_content=post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> post, a senior lawyer at Morrison &#038; Foerster, another firm with a significant Texas presence,\u00a0went on an unhinged rant against\u00a0Texas officials and, in particular, Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has led the fight against abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The post\u00a0\u2014 ignoring the fact that many lawyers are pro-life \u2014\u00a0fulminates that \u201c[t]he Attorney General of Texas has threatened Sidley and Austin, a\u00a0distinguished law firm committed to the rule of law, with criminal prosecution for its offering to pay travel expenses for abortion. \u2026 Every lawyer, every bar association at every level, and every law office in the United States needs to come to the defense of our brothers and sisters in that respected firm.\u00a0This attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>None of the\u00a0firms announcing they would pay for abortion costs post<em>-Dobbs <\/em>announced any enhancement of their maternity leave policies, thus indicating a decided preference that pregnant staff abort their pregnancies and get back to work rather than allow children to be born.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Mr. Soriano, a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, started his professional life at New York&#8217;s Simpson Thacher &#038; Bartlett before working in law and compliance in Corporate America, most recently as Chief Compliance Officer at Celgene Corporation and Insmed Incorporated, both pharmaceutical companies.
