Wade<\/em>, activists have unleashed a <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonstand.com\/news\/terror-wave-of-25-new-attacks-against-pregnancy-centers-churches-after-dobbs\">wave of attacks<\/a> against <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.frc.org\/EF\/EF22F17.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 100<\/a> pro-life pregnancy centers, churches, and nonprofit groups nationwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, as Kansas voters head to the polls on Aug. 2 to vote on a <a href=\"https:\/\/sos.ks.gov\/elections\/constitutional-amendment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pro-life amendment<\/a> to their state constitution, that bitterness and disruption have reached even usually peaceful parts of the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the past month, Joel Richardson, who lives in Overland Park near Kansas City with his wife and five children, has said he\u2019s had nine \u201cVote Yes\u201d signs vandalized or stolen from his front yard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time I\u2019ve ever put up any political yard sign since living in Kansas for the past five years,\u201d he said in a phone interview. \u201cWith an issue this important, there\u2019s power in publicly making a stand. It shows your neighbors who have a similar mindset that they\u2019re not alone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksnt.com\/news\/kansas\/value-them-both-signs-stolen-vandalized-across-kansas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmbc.com\/article\/police-investigating-vandalism-at-overland-park-church\/40568125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ValueThemBoth\/status\/1539364144905871360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Paddy0Furniture\/status\/1541435046552379398\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posts<\/a> confirm that at least dozens of \u201cVote Yes\u201d signs have been destroyed, spray-painted, or stolen. \u201cWe have always respected the First Amendment and peaceful protests,\u201d said Mackenzie Haddix, spokeswoman for <a href=\"https:\/\/valuethemboth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Value Them Both Coalition<\/a>, in a statement. \u201cUnfortunately,\u00a0our supporters have experienced aggressive actions from opponents of the amendment who are clearly misinformed about what this will mean for Kansas.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Vandals Steal Signs from Richardson\u2019s Yard<\/h2>\n<p>In the suburbs of Johnson County, part of the growing Kansas City metro area, Richardson <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Joel7Richardson\/status\/1541095996091949057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a> on June 26 as he put up a \u201cVote Yes\u201d sign.\u00a0Vandals soon struck.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>But he had two sources to get more signs as needed: local adoption agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charismanews.com\/opinion\/53568-father-of-10-children-stands-against-planned-parenthood-mdash-through-the-power-of-prayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zoe\u2019s House<\/a> and Trinity House, a nearby Catholic bookstore. \u201cI\u2019m a son of the Reformation,\u201d said Richardson, an itinerant minister and <a href=\"https:\/\/joelstrumpet.com\/?page_id=8568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">author<\/a>. \u201cBut I absolutely celebrate the Roman Catholic Church and their faithful members\u2019 strong stance in defense of justice for the innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the first sign was stolen, the second and third were <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Joel7Richardson\/status\/1542622997030342658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reinforced<\/a> with rebar rods and packing tape. And by signs four and five, Richardson and his family were keeping closer watch.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"vsQSNMhb8c7VHG3OTEbf2pwi9KZN8gafzmBBWtogaFOW4lZA1RKA6Yx5IrDh3ndk0Tty1kI6rC0RLYHq25X\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Was just watering my trees and some 17 year old kid pulled up in broad day-light and tried to take the sign. Ran over, caught him, and called the police. I decided to let him go with a warning. Most often, they would just stomp on it to destroy it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Nextdoor \u2018Neighbors\u2019 Endorse the Vandalism\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Richardson\u2019s frustration grew at this pattern of crime. \u201cI could easily affix razor blades to a yard sign. But then if they came into my yard, tried to steal my sign, and got hurt, they could sue me. So the homeowner is really in many ways at a loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, he caught the latest act of vandalism on video.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"psvnaqbTkdS8KL4oP7fz2JYcQ1W3jMDNti0gHmUrEeVZX9\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Two more (#7 and 8) of my vote Yes signs were ripped up and mangled in my yard tonight. They also stuck a NO sign in their place. Yeah, its amazingly annoying and illegal, but ultimately, it&#8217;s just high school kids being high school kids. It stated in part: \u201cIf the girls look familiar, maybe at least talk to them. One Nextdoor neighbor wrote: \u201cGood on them. They\u2019re standing up for their rights. Human rights should always be more important than property rights.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"232\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot_User-Comment-Nextdoor-Post-1024x232-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-276281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot_User-Comment-Nextdoor-Post-1024x232-1.png 1024w, https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot_User-Comment-Nextdoor-Post-300x68.png 300w, https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot_User-Comment-Nextdoor-Post-768x174.png 768w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot_User-Comment-Nextdoor-Post.png 1132w\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>However, within 72 hours, Richardson said, a moderator emailed him about taking down the video. \u201cNextdoor staff removed your content because we determined that it was a violation of our Community Guidelines,\u201d an email provided by Richardson read. \u201cNextdoor is not a place to publicly shame your neighbors.\u201d However, he noticed comments in support of the vandalism remained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Neighbor Caught Red-Handed<\/h2>\n<p>Despite pushback, Richardson said he saw the humor in the drama and wasn\u2019t trying to hurt or be cruel to anyone. \u201cAs intense and emotional as this issue is, I still am a big believer in having fun with it. Let\u2019s all lighten up a little bit.\u201d By this time, his 11-year-old was in on the escapade.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"ywJ7mbtfoGK9vMuXYdSHU4r5IB6TeRVLnxEOkAlcCps8320Z1DFQWahPNzijg\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My son had the brilliant idea of putting an Apple tile or some type of tracker inside the next Pro-Life sign so we can simply track the vandal-thieves to their house. He hit on glue traps used to catch spiders. \u201cI <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Joel7Richardson\/status\/1549041293166526464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">went on Amazon<\/a> and found you can get big rolls of this rat trap glue for cheap.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the dead of night, a neighbor took the bait.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Richardson\u2019s iPhone tracking the tags led him to a house less than a mile away. He parked and his iPhone began to beep as he approached a car in the driveaway. The trunk was ajar, with metal rods sticking out. When local police officers knocked at the alleged vandal\u2019s door, Richardson said, the 22-year-old young man, clearly upset, knelt down and placed his hands on his head. You don\u2019t come into someone\u2019s yard and try to take that. That\u2019s not right.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The alleged vandal was apologetic, according to Richardson, and the two had a short dialogue about the issues. Richardson also wanted to know if the rat trap glue he used really worked.\u00a0\u201cI put that stuff all over the signs,\u201d he said. \u201cThe young man that stole the two signs, he said it was very effective and actually ruined his clothes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Signs of the Times<\/h2>\n<p>As the vote on Aug. 2 nears, further disruptions are expected. Haddix said Value Them Both will continue to represent the pro-life cause \u201cthrough peaceful and persistent calls to Kansans to value both women and babies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Richardson, his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/valuethemboth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Value Them Both<\/a>\u201d yard sign stands again. Some would question why he didn\u2019t insist the rule of law be enforced. Was that apology real\u2014with officers standing nearby?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure, it\u2019s frustrating to have multiple people steal my property,\u201d said Richardson. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t want to contribute to a cascading snowball of polarization and hatred in our country. Instead, we had a face-to-face conversation where he heard my heart, and I learned a little bit of his story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The minister added: \u201cThe Bible says, \u2018Mercy triumphs over judgment.\u2019 And I hope that little human interaction will impact him more than if I just pressed charges.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With five <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/2022_abortion-related_ballot_measures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abortion-related state ballot initiatives<\/a> to be decided this year, the \u201csummer of rage\u201d could extend into fall in several states.
