He also was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure, TMZ noted.<\/p>\n<p>Caan, whose Hollywood career began in 1964 with a small role in \u201cLady in a Cage,\u201d and acted as recently as last year in the romantic comedy \u201cQueen Bees,\u201d died on on the evening of July 6, according to family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,\u201d the family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-actor-james-caan-dies-at-82-years-old\">said<\/a> in a statement posted to Caan\u2019s Twitter account. \u201cThe family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bronx-born actor often played tough guys, and in 1971 scored a key role as terminally ill football star Brian Piccolo in the television film \u201cBrian\u2019s Song.\u201d Billy Dee Williams starred opposite Caan as NFL immortal Gale Sayers. The critically acclaimed performance led to his most famous role a year later as Don Corleone\u2019s hot-tempered son and brother of Al Pacino\u2019s Michael Corleone.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Variety marking the 50-year anniversary of director Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s 1972 classic, Caan disclosed that he had auditioned for the role that made Pacino a Tinseltown superstar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I had a number of auditions for different parts,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/godfather-robert-duvall-james-caan-talia-shire-making-of-1235211379\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cI wanted to play Sonny, because that\u2019s what Francis wanted. But he called me one night from New York and said, \u2018Jimmy the studio wants you to come here and test.\u2019 I said, \u2018Test what? You got a Porsche you want me to drive around the block?\u2019\u00a0And Francis told me they wanted me to play Michael. So I went to New York and read for the role and then they had Al [Pacino] come in and test and he was a little self-destructive. They warned him, don\u2019t do that again or you\u2019re fired. But Francis got what he wanted in the end. He always does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coppola <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/07\/francis-ford-coppola-james-caan-godfather-statement-1235059830\/\">remembered<\/a> his friend through a heartfelt statement provided exclusively to Deadline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJimmy was someone who stretched through my life longer and closer than any motion picture figure I\u2019ve ever known,\u201d Coppola told the outlet after Caan\u2019s death. \u201cFrom those earlier times working together on The Rain People, and throughout all the milestones of my life, his films and the many great roles he played will never be forgotten.
