The race is a re-match from 2018, with Gov. Brian Kemp (R) facing Stacey Abrams (D).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the race was, until recently, considered a &#8220;Toss-Up,&#8221; Cook Political Report has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/analysis\/governors\/georgia-governor\/georgia-governors-race-shifts-toss-lean-republican?utm_source=newsletter&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=nlsub\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">now shifted the race<\/a> to the &#8220;Lean Republican&#8221; territory. Sabato&#8217;s Crystal Ball and Inside Elections had already <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Georgia_gubernatorial_election,_2022\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">changed their ratings<\/a> to &#8220;Lean Republican&#8221; and &#8220;Tilt Republican,&#8221; respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">&#8220;As Axios reported, the majority of Kemp\u2019s money has come from in-state donors ($26.2 million), while $10.2 million of Abrams\u2019s haul has come from California, compared to just $7 million from Georgians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Josh Kraushaar (@JoshKraushaar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoshKraushaar\/status\/1550460087822696449?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 22, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Particularly telling for Kemp is that a majority of his donations have come from Georgia, while a significant amount of Abrams&#8217; donations are coming from California. Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/07\/15\/stacey-abrams-fundraising-out-of-state\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">published a helpful chart<\/a> last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That Axios report where the chart is included noted that &#8220;If the trend holds, Abrams would be the only Georgia gubernatorial nominee from either party since at least the 1990s to receive a majority of campaign funds from out of state, according to an Axios analysis of campaign finance records.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also points to how this could be a liability for Abrams:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>The intrigue:\u00a0<\/strong>Republicans see out-of-state support as one of Abrams&#8217; biggest liabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kemp&#8217;s campaign has tried to <a data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/briankemp2022.com\/2022\/06\/07\/kemp-for-governor-releases-first-general-election-ad\/\" data-vars-content-id=\"b17d6918-c9f5-4558-9913-eda96b12c87c\" data-vars-event-category=\"story\" data-vars-headline=\"Stacey Abrams&#039; blockbuster fundraising driven by out-of-state money\" data-vars-item=\"in_content_link\" data-vars-link-text=\"paint\" data-vars-sub-category=\"story\" href=\"https:\/\/briankemp2022.com\/2022\/06\/07\/kemp-for-governor-releases-first-general-election-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paint<\/a> her as someone who&#8217;s been busy &#8220;courting liberal billionaires in New York and California&#8221; since their 2018 race.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Georgia will never be on Stacey&#8217;s mind,&#8221; Kemp <a data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oqWUNoxy0Z4\" data-vars-content-id=\"b17d6918-c9f5-4558-9913-eda96b12c87c\" data-vars-event-category=\"story\" data-vars-headline=\"Stacey Abrams&#039; blockbuster fundraising driven by out-of-state money\" data-vars-item=\"in_content_link\" data-vars-link-text=\"said\" data-vars-sub-category=\"story\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oqWUNoxy0Z4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> at his May primary victory party. &#8220;Her radical ideas are meant to please people in New York, California and Chicago who are funding her campaign.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Kemp campaign has certainly jumped on highlighting these figures, calling on voters to &#8220;Help us BEAT Abrams &#038; her blue-state buddies.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Stacey Abrams is funded by liberal states like California and New York. Raphael Warnock.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This rating change also comes as a Cygnal poll released on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/22090377-ga-gov-kemp-1st-general-election-memo-v2-1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">shows<\/a> Kemp ahead of Abrams with his 50 percent to her 45 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to highlighting Kemp&#8217;s higher support, a memo from Cygnal noted that &#8220;Hispanic and Asian voters are shifting toward Kemp&#8221; and that &#8220;African-American voters are not a homogenous voter block for Abrams,&#8221; as one-quarter of such voters under 35 are supporting Kemp.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The memo points out that &#8220;These younger African-American Georgians are overwhelmingly concerned about the cost of gas and rising costs without a pay increase&#8221; and &#8220;They also are more likely to blame Biden for inflation because one-third of them have an unfavorable opinion of the President.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Further, the memo argues that &#8220;Compared to 2020, Kemp is doing better with key voter groups.&#8221; President Joe Biden won Georgia by 49.5 percent, compared to former President Trump&#8217;s 49.3 percent, with the president&#8217;s victory coming in part thanks to his winning margin with independents. Kemp has a +13 margin with independents over 50, and is down only 6 points with independents under 50.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kemp also has more support, at 94 percent, among Republicans than Abrams does among Democrats, which is at 92 percent. The Republican governor is also increasing his &#8220;very favorable&#8221; rating.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The poll was conducted July 5-7, 2022 with 1,200 likely general election voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.65 percentage points.
