By 2 p.m. ET, AT&#038;T\u2019s stock was down by about 7.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The conservative forecast comes as AT&#038;T joins other companies to prepare for a potential slowdown in consumer spending in the second half of the year against the backdrop of four-decades high inflation in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>CEO John Stankey stated Thursday that some customers are struggling to pay their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-phone\">phone<\/a> bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s clearly some dynamics in the economy. We have customers that are stretching out their payments a little bit,\u201d he told CNBC. \u201cWe expect that they\u2019re going to continue to pay their bills, but they\u2019re taking longer to do it. That\u2019s not atypical in an economic cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May, the company said it would start to raise prices on some of its older wireless plans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-03\/at-t-is-raising-prices-on-wireless-plans-to-address-higher-costs\">According<\/a> to a Bloomberg News report, AT&#038;T, which also owns Cricket Wireless, raised its monthly fees by up to $6 a month on some single-line plans and $12 on family plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went in there and said that we\u2019re going to have to raise some prices on these long-standing plans,\u201d Stankey said on CNBC Thursday before adding that he believes there\u2019s \u201ca more tepid economic environment moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It comes more than a week after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly Consumer Price Index report that showed a key inflation metric rose 9.1 percent year-over-year, hitting highs not seen since November 1981. Gas prices also remain elevated, and as of Thursday, the average price nationwide stood at $4.40 per gallon, <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">according<\/a> to AAA data.<\/p>\n<p>PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/att-lifts-wireless-service-revenue-growth-forecast-strong-subscriber-additions-2022-07-21\/\">told<\/a> Reuters that inflation will drive users to consider signing up for cheaper services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not surprised to hear consumers are paying bills more slowly; they are already struggling with higher food and energy prices,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-21\/at-t-tops-subscriber-estimates-lowers-2022-cash-flow-forecast\">said<\/a> Wolfe Research analyst Peter Supino Thursday. \u201cI\u2019m not worried so much for AT&#038;T as I am for the broader consumer economy. You wonder if this is the canary in the coal mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added more than 800,000 monthly bill-paying wireless subscribers and 316,000 new broadband customers in the quarter ended June 30 and raised its growth forecast for annual revenue in its wireless service business.
